National Parks and Firearms --- A long way from Teddy Roosevelt

I must give credit to John Hay Rabb in the newest issue to Guns and Ammo who wrote an article about this topic. I found it very interesting and I recommend that you get a copy to read the full article. I hope the following facts interest you, and spark a bit of thought and comment:

*The National Park Service controls about 400 parks with 84 million acres, and employs 1,800 armed rangers. That's 46,000 acres per ranger
*There were 4,400 violent crimes in NPs last year
*Nationwide law enforcement agencies SOLVE 70% of all murders, 45% of all rapes and 58% of all aggravated assaults.
The NPS solves 29%, 34% and 40% respectively.

Firearms of all kinds are NOT welcome in National Parks. Personal defense handguns are prohibited, even if your a CCW permit holder. If a firearm is brought into a NP they must be temporarily rendered inoperable. Loaded weapons are subject to confiscation by park authorties. And by the way, each park uses it's own emergency number.

Something to think about as you visit one of our great National Parks this summer.

Man, I did'nt know that. I'm glad you brought that up. No firearms? When did that happen? I'll look around and see if I can get a copy. I did'nt realize there was so many voilent crimes in NP's.

A sign outside of Yellowstone says, no firearms allowed in the Park, or if they are transported thru, must be unloaded and stored, not readily accessible.

Plus we all know thru deductive reasoning, that those who commit crimes with guns in the Parks are criminals, because they brought loaded guns into the Park in the first place. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Honest citizens with no guns, criminals with guns, high percent of crimes. Makes you wonder what will happen if no honest citizen can carry a firearm anywhere. (gun control).

Like we have known for years.......when you restrict firearm ownership / possession, the crooks (who break laws daily) will STILL have the means to acquire and carry weapons.

Makes you wonder what would happen if we all started to act like Charles Bronson in the "Death Wish" movies, huh? Wonder how many "tough" predators would be trying to take advantage of our women & children if they knew someone armed was watching them from around the corner??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sorry to detour the thread.....just makes me HORRIBLY mad when they try to restrict the honest people's right to protection. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/angry-smiley-055.gif

I think the gun bans in the national parks go way back. When they were put in place they were more concerned with poaching than other crimes. Maybe it’s time for them to rethink that.

I wouldn't get to worked up about the crime stats in the National Parks. After all the stats cited only relate to one violent crime per every 19,000+ acres. It's a hell of a lot safer to be in a national park than is is in New York City where 4,400 violent crimes constitute about a month's worth of activity.

The National Park Service clearance rate doesn't mean much either because unlike criminals and victims in the city, criminals and victims in national parks are almost always visitors. Little is known about the victim and his/her relationship to the suspect, if any, and the suspect has gone home, where ever that is. It's a lot more difficult to investigate crimes in a transient population environment. Their clearance rate is probably pretty good as I would guess that most of the clearances are represented by on view arrests or arrests made within the first couple of hours after the crime is committed.

For me, I would much rather be in Yellowstone or Glacier or Yosemite without a gun than be in New York City with a gun.
