NBA players not saluting flag?

Nightwatchman,

The players(most of them) just stood there facing the flag. They weren't disrespectful.

But most of the coaching staffs and a few of the players put their hands over their hearts so it made me curious as to why the difference.

For the most part, it must just be how they were taught to show respect.

My guess would be they just don't know any better. Look around the next time your at a stadium and see how many people actually put their hands on their hearts during the anthem (not many at the sporting events i've been to).

All you can say is that the Majority of Americas sports have gone to hell in a hand basket except good ole american hopscotch /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif... uh, er, I mean Motocross! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'll agree with that if you add NASCAR to your exception. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Golf ain't a sport but a lot of those guys have some class. I don't care for some of the Eurotrash on the PGA Tour though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I work as a medic for NASCAR at Richmond International Raceway and for the most part drivers, team member and even the fans are respectful during the Athem. They stand and remove their hats when it is played. Considering many of them are beer soaked before the race even starts that is quite and accomplishment.

Several years ago a driver wife was admonished on TV for not removing her cap during the athem.

They are even revent during the pray.

So quick to cast the first stone. Dont make a mountain out of a mole hill. Just because they didnt put their hand over their heart i wouldnt start calling them "america haters" or make religious judgements.

Just to play devil's advocate here:

In the Military, at least the Marine Corps anyway, you are taught to SALUTE the colors during the National Anthem while IN UNIFORM. While wearing civilian attire or while UNCOVERED (no uniform hat or cover) we are taught to stand at attention.

At all sporting events or anywhere else that the National Anthem is played even still being on Active Duty, I only stand erect with my arms by my side, I do not put my hand over my heart.

I sure hope someone comes up to me one day and questions my loyalty to the flag and to this country.

Thanks for the info Tim, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-006.gif

BTW,I love my Foxpro. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Just trying to point out that it is personal perception as to whether or not someone is disrespecting the flag by not putting your hand over your heart.

I've been going to work for the last 12yrs defending the flag and this country and I for one have never done it nor do I care if you or some NBA stars don't put there hand over there heart.

It's just like the debate that is often brought up about Presidents that Salute or don't Salute there uniformed Color and Guard details. While it's a great gesture that some do it, the ones that don't are technically correct, because WE are taught that you don't salute unless you are wearing a cover.

Like I said, it's personal perception and everyone can believe what they like and by all means if you would like to show respect by placing your hand over your heart than do so, but others shouldn't be so quick to judge based on there personal feelings.

When was serving I saluted when not wearing a cover. For instance, when we entered the base comanders office, or when working on the flight line or working in some situation where a cover wasn't appropriate. But you are right about not always saluting the flag .... the quandry struck me the other day while attending a Girl Scout function and were pledging alegance to the flag.

Here's a side question that I honestly don't have an answer to. Do people in other country's pledge alegence to their flag? Sure they have a national anthem that they pay attention to, but do they actually pledge to their flag?

AirForce right?

I have also seen ARMY personel while doing some training at White Sands Missle Range salute indoors uncovered. As Marines who are taught that, that is a NO-NO, we had to just sit back and laugh.

Every service is different and laughing is sort of inappropriate, should we have laughed when you did not show respect for the officers? Don't answer that it was just something to think about. We did have battle field rules and we followed them just like you. I appreciate the drive and pride of being a marine, respect goes both ways though.

Michael,

Are you for real? The post was meant to play on the Service vs. Service common joking that happens all the time.

Getting up tight about a couple of Marines laughing at ARMY guys is a little much heh? Making fun of other services and thinking yours is the best, is pretty much a tradition and it will continue long after you or I, even though at the heart of the matter, we all respect what each other does in the long run and we would all die for each other.

Let not take ourselves too seriously.

Yes I am for real, but I'm not really upset either. Being a bit of a jerk, like I am and I'm serious about that, I never saw the purpose to service rivalry. I must admit this though, I wasn't stationed with many of the other services so I was unaware of the difference in proper saluting situations. Our standards were fairly simple, but I’m sure I would have made a fool of myself in saluting an officer from another service.

To my knowledge it is appropriate for all military personnel in or out of uniform to stand at the position of attention while the national anthem is played. Its not necesarily customary for civilians to do this. Not sure about retirees though.

Some basketball player standing there like he's back on the block and not in the military is wrong. I get a little bent over the fact some citizens of this fine nation who dont render the proper courtesy but its their choice, I choose to not watch their sport. Never have. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I went to school with two kids who every morning while we were saying the pledge of allegiance wouldnt place their hand over their heart, said it was a religious thing and they couldnt do it since it said "one nation under god". I guess if we are one nation under god and thats our values we should be somewhat offended at this. But in this day in time, not everyone is on board. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

All this dosnt change the fact, that there are nothing but slugs on the NBA courts around the country today. They will even jump in the stands and punch the fans! Somebody said remember the old days, I am too young to remember those but I do remember guys by the name of Jordan, Bird, Magic, Barkley and the sorts.

Lets face it though, if it wasnt for the NBA those welfare lines would be longer, or our prison population that much larger.

I wont watch it on tv, let alone pay for a ticket.
