any north dakota guys plannin on huntin the early goose season, or have hunted it in the past. i have but one question, big decoy spread or a small one. I have heard both wasy and this is my first bird season in north dakota. thanks for the help
I just watched a Jeff Foiles DVD. He was hunting in Canada early had a smallish spread of Silo's The Birds are primarily in Family groups and I think a smaller spread would work.
that was kinda my thought but like i said i have never hunted up here before so i wasnt sure. the pond i am going to be primarily hunting the birds dont even leave so i aint sure what i am going to do there. they just walk up the bank and eat away at the land owners canola field. i will have to figure something on that.
this time of the year if its warm out the geese will hold on the roost. Hunting the roose is the fastest way to run the birds out of there. If you hunt it once the best way would be to kick the birds off before sun light. Set a few decoys (what ever you can carry out in one trip). Set the decoys where the geese were and get down. When they come back you will be where they want to be on the X. If the geese start using fields go to the fields and save the roost. If undisterbed the roost might stay until the first migration
okay i will try that. i will be hunting it for the first time in the mornin. we scouted about 730 pm today and the birds where not there. tomorrow aint opening day but i am the only one hunting that area. the farmer wants them all out of there soon since they are putting a good dent in his canola field. i have another area that i planned on hunting for the regular season so i am kinda thinkin of just trying to help the land owner and run the birds out of the area till after he harvests it. then when the regular season opens i will fall back on the other spot.
