Hi guys, I hope to buy a Marlin 22 mag rifle this month and would like to know your opinion on which kind to go with. The tube feed or the clip model? I am going to be coon hunting with it at night. The clip model sounds good just for the fact of easy unloading when going from one place to another. Any advice you can give me would be great. Thanks, Mike

I have a Marlin 25N and the only downfall to the clip model is the clip digs into your back while your toteing it. Other than that its a great gun.

Check the trigger pull. Dad Has a Marlin Model 25MN 22 Mag (clip version) and his trigger pull is hard, Wish I had a trigger pull guage cause it seems to be around 12 lbs (guesstimate)

I found a gunsmithing tip for online for that gun. I changed the trigger spring out with a common bic writing pen spring. Made a nice 3 pound pull trigger. You can change it in 15 minutes.

The pre-9000 trigger 25mn was a bear for pull. I has a smith smooth that out on mine and it's a sweet shooter now.
The clips feed models are ok, I like to have a spare on hand. I might be concerned with the pressure from the tube on soft points or the v-max. maybe someone with a tube feed 22mag can chime in on that.

You can take the magazine from the Marlin and shorten it to carry 5 rounds. The main benefit here is that the mag will then fit flush with the stock and not dig into your back. I did this to my Marlin 22 Mag when I had it. It made carrying the rifle much easier, since the mag didn't dig into my back anymore. MI VHNTR

I just bought a Marlin 925M a couple of weeks ago and so far I like it. I stripped the "hardwood finished" laminate stock to see what was underneath and found a fairly nice stock. I then applied a Minwax wipe-on poly sealer. I free floated the barrel, added the bic pin spring to the sear on the T900 trigger, removed the iron sights and mounted a BSA Sweet 22 scope. I don't have a trigger gauge, but the spring did lighten the trigger noticeably. I have a Marlin 25 so I understand the magazine gouging in the back. I'm thinking about shortening the magazine. I wanted a 22 magnum for mid-range hunting when the Colt HB is too heavy.

OK, lets get a little explanation on shortning the clip. OH and as to the original subject of this thread.. I like the clip over tube feed for ease of loading and unloading. In IN you can not have a weapon in your vehicle unless it is totally unloaded, unless it is your personal protection piece. So that means anytime I am changing hunting spots I have to unload and a clip is just a lot easier.

I saw a post on another website that talked about shortening the mag to 5 rounds, but for the life of me I can't remember where. For ease of loading, I like a box magazine fed rifle.

I would go with the clip feed. They are a lot better in and out of trucks. I have 2 of them 917v and 22 mag. Took both of them to my buddy at the body shop stripped them and rino lined them.I cant stand that cheep pallet wood look. the rino lining has gotten a lot of complements and I have drug these 2 rifles everwere.

I am a little shocked...I would have thought there would be one Tube Fed Guy here.

I guess I am the lone voice. I like a tube fed, because here in Colorado, it is fine to drive with rounds in the mag, just not in the chamber of your rifle or shotgun.

And when I get out of the rig, I am walking in the mountains, so having the extra ammo on the gun, and not bulking my pockets...well thats way cool, and last but not least...as I was out walking, about 9 years ago, I was going through some close aspens, and when I got ready for a shot at a bunny with my Marlin 25, there was one round in the chamber...the mag was gone...no clue when or where. Don't know if I didn't get it seated all the way, or ????

So now all my .22 LR, and my 2 .22 Mags are Tube fed models.

Just my 2 cents worth

clip magazines do not distort the bullet tips like a tube type magazine can, this fact should also affect the accuracy of the given gun accordingly. To what degree this is a factor would have to be proven at the range, but it does make sense that a clip magazine has the potential to be more accurate in rimfire models.

I know we're not talking benchrest accuracy here, but I've read where the tube hanging off the barrel will sometimes affect your rifle. But then again, I've read where people said they have had no problems. I don't have any experience with a tube fed other than growing up plinking with a bunch.

Thanks guys for all your help in deciding. I think I am going to go with the clip model. I just have to find one to buy. I want to buy a used gun to save money. I am going to look into that clip shortening method. I am going to post a tread next to get advice on the difference between the 22mag and the 17hmr. Please respond on that if you have some input.
Thanks again.

AR-MAN,

Just to sum up what little experience I've had with them, I've had two clip models and one tubular Marlin 22 mag. In my opinion, the tubular is just more annoying due to loading and unloading. I personally like the clip models. Currently I have the model 925 MN, which came with a factory camo stock. It's a decent rifle. I topped it with a Nikon 3x9 scope, and it's nice. Shoots good groups too using Remington 33 gr. V-Max. My experience is that the 22 Mags are not as accurate as a long rifle, but they do ok, and definitely pack more punch.

The trigger pull on my gun was hard, but not bad with the new 9000 trigger. I replaced it with the Rifle Basix trigger, and it's now very smooth, and light.

Good luck with your decision, and good shooting. Keep us informed.

Another question tho. Where can I find the Savage version of the clip for my rifle? Wally world has them in Marlin but from what I am undsertanidng the Savage is a little better for making any mods to.
