I am new to snaring and can't seem to catch a cat. I am using 8 to 10" loops around 8" off the ground. I see tracks that look like they go right thru the snare but it appears untouched. Going under it maybe? Have had this happen 3 times the last week. Any suggestions?

Try the loop about 10-12" and 12-14" off the ground. More like a coyote snare. Some of the cats I have caught are equal to some good coyotes. You may want a lock, or loop that closes easy.T.20

roderunner, T-20 is right the more I think about it, looking at the size of the cats I see most are as big or even bigger than the average coyote, they may be walking right over the loop.
Good Luck!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If you have cat tracks follow him and find narrow spots where he is going through the thick brush, snare him there. More open trails I use a 10" loop with the bottom of the loop 8" off the ground, fence the cat hard make him go where you want him to go. What size of cable and type of locks are you using??? Try 5/64 cable and cam locks. The frozen creeks are good this time of year block them off heavy and set a cople snares in the opening's use cedar trees or whatever. good luck. Corey

They may be going through yer snare.I've seen cats/fox go through 8-10" yote snares without disturbing them.I know they aren't going under cuz I use a "nose stick" under all my snares to prop the snare and raise critters head.Try a 6-7"loop if yer targeting cats.I know they look awful small, but a buddy of mine who catches lots of cats makes his that way for just that reason.Good luck,Grinr /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Finally caught one. A nice big tom, probably 30+ pounds. Some other critter beat us to it though, and ate the belly and guts. Went with a 10 inch loop,5 inches off the ground. The cats been getting under our snares.

Nice job roderunner, good thing you didn't follow my advice. I new you would catch one sooner or later! Now you need to get the coyote that ate your kitty! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
