Need help with a scope mount on my old .222 -Pics included!

Hey guys,

I have a rather old Savage model 340D in a .222 cal bolt action rifle. It currently has a scope on it with a Weaver side 1" scope mount. This is because I believe the spent cartridge is dislodged rather high on the barrel and not out the immediate side. The problem is my scope is rather small for light transmission and would like to get a
3-9x50 scope. The problem is the current scope almost touches the barrel as is. I don't think a 3-9x50 will fit in the scope mount due to barrel clearance. I don't see any where else I can add a scope mount. I have bridged scope mounts on my other rifles but they are all center scope mounts, not side mounts. Please if anyone has had past experience with this rifle and situation I'm all ears.

I can post some photos tomorrow when I get the photos uploaded.

Thanks ahead of time for reading and taking the time to help.

Short answer. You do not need a 50mm obj. for good light transmision.

What you need is GOOD GLASS from the start, regardless of size. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I think mine is already a 30mm. It really stinks with light transmission. I'm also looking for a inexpensive solution. I wish I could afford expensive glass but funds are short.

I'm not good with scope parts but the main part that attaches to the scope mount is a 1". I think the scope is a 6 power. And the front lense a bit smaller than a 40. I hope I make sense with my lack of the right words to describe it.

Good glass will pay for itself everytime you look through it. You WILL be further ahead in the end to save until you can get a good piece of glass. In the optics department there really is no free lunch. I would suggest picking up a decent piece used. There is nothing wrong with a used scopes w/ringmarks, often it is a great deal. I have lots of rifles, but no where near as many scopes. The ones I have I am happy with though. I swap scopes between rifles before I will spend money on stuff that is not up to par. Just my humble opinion.

If you want a good variable power, you can find a vari-X I for around 190-200, if you look, maybe less, in 3x9x40. That will transmit as much light as you want. Burris and Nikon both have good scopes in that range as well, but if your trying to save a little cash, go with a leupy. Honestly, like brdeano says, if you can just wait, and get the best you can, you will be money ahead. If you buy used, get a leupy or a nikon at the least, from there and up they all have lifetime warranties, even if you are not the original owner.

BTW, IMO, you dont notice light trans difference from 40-50 mm and from 1" to 30 mm until you get to these better scopes. Others will disagree, but thats my .02!

Looking at the exact gun you have i just found on the internet, with a weaver side mount, you have weaver rings. so all you need to do is go find some high mount weaver rings at your local sporting goods and you can raise the scope off the barrel( had to do this on my NEF 204). And by the looks of it, you need to keep the scope mount the way it is, since every one I have seen is done that way. For a used scope, try the pawn shops first, the your locally owned gun stores, the big chain stores dont do used. If your in the dallas area i could give you a big list!

Sorry high rings won't work for that mount...the botom half of the rings are milled out of the aluminum that is the mount...there are no other mounts that I am aware of...a good gunsmith can drill and tap it to take weaver bases, and then you can use what everheight rings you want...but you will have jams, from the empty case hitting the scope and falling back into the action...the base and rings you have are what you can get...now I also know that the 40MM objective scopes will fit...(Have one on mine)...so that will get you a little more light than the one you have, sounds like a 32mm Objective...and if you hit the pawn shops and gunshows, you will find old steel tube weavers that have good glass, and are less than $100, you will find Redfields that have great glass, for $100 to $150, and you ill find others that will fill you bill for the prices you can afford...don't worry too much about the outer finish, is the glass goo and clear, and are the adjustments solid...the rest is barganing...I have a Weaver 6X 40MM objective on my gun works like a charm...hope this helps.

Thats the pics I was looking at, and yes i missed the pic that shows the bottom half of the rings actually being the scope mount. Thats an odd design...doing a search find a member on here named HOGBUSTER1, found a post of his and he has that exact gun.

Coyotegetter, what brand/model of scope is on the rifle now? Bring on the photos.

If light transmission is your biggest concern/need I would scrap the variable solution and go with the lowest fixed power decent scope you can find. A good 2.5 or 4X (if anyone makes one anymore???) would do wonders for the task at hand.
If not a fixed power then get a variable with the absolute lowest low power setting you can find. Avoid all of the hype about tube size, objective size, and magnification for the caliber you're shooting, the mounting arrangement that rifle provides, and what your budget sounds like. Something starting out at 1.5 or 2 would be ideal.

Do a search on the internet and you can find formulas for calculating objective size versus power or magnification setting. Some of today's marketing is somewhat suspect. Some of the scope manufacturers used to list the formulas until the 50mm craze took hold. Some may still?????

As far as finding used scopes:
The classifieds on this site.
Local Pawn shops.
I just picked up a flawless Aetec 2.5-8 for $30. Something like that would fit your needs well.
\ E-Bay.
Look for the actual auctions, not necessarily the stores or buy it nows.
www.bearbasin.com used to have what they called a "sample list" that had demo's and sale items at great prices.

P.S. I hunt with a buddy on occassion who has your exact caliber, rifle model, and scope mount using a 2.5x old steel tubed scope. He and that rifle are a thing for coyotes to fear.

Sorry about the delay in photos fellas. Here they are.
The plastic object on top of the scope is my red light mount.
