Need Help with Unseasonal Temps in PA

Just got back from fox huntin and skunked again. These last 2 weeks have been bad. Haven't called in anything but a tom cat. Been huntin thick brush with grass roadways and wide trails. Close shots if one would show. No noise in the brush behind me, no barking, nothing. Even tried entire setups with the mouse squeaker. Same results. I'm hunting setups I've used before for grays. Over the summer and throughout bow season saw plenty of grays.
I think these 50-70 degree days in Janurary with all the rain and wind isn't helping. Maybe they don't need the energy since its been so warm. No snow and no cold temps must keep the rabbits and mice up out of holes so the foxs have plenty to eat. I saw 5 rabbits in 75yd stretch on the way to the first setup. Its been over 50 every day since Christmas. One day it may have dropped below 50, but not by much.
My son saw a grounhog munching in a field today. Strange happenings for 2nd week of Jan.
Anybody else having any luck in Southern PA????? Anybody???????? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
Hello, Im from Northeast PA. Here it hs been bad hunting since we got that little snow storm on Wednesday night. I went out tuesday night and made 2 stand and got 2 fox in but missed them. But every night since we have had a crust on top the snow and you cant go anywhere without being heard from about 4 miles away /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif . I went out Thurs, and Fri, nights but had nothing come in. Maybe tonight will be better the temp. is supposed to get up to about 40 today, maybe that will melt the crust off. I'd trade the summer weather for crunchy snow anyday. I'm still waiting for the temp to drop below 40. Actually the temp last night squeaked down to 37 but couldn't get anything to respond. Back in early November it got in the single digits and low 20's on and off for about a week or so. It made for some great bunny huntin. This is the worst predator season for me yet. I should just be happy that I don't rely on this years predator hunting for clothing or food. LOL
There should be some great hunting up your way. I know the entire state like the back of my hand. I used to cover all 45,000 square miles of it troubleshooting and repairing networks. Sometimes drive over 700 miles a day and never leave the state. I've been to Erie 3 times in one week. 600 mile round trip from the PA,MD border. Averaged 2500 miles a week. All in PA and the huntin looks good your direction.
A buddy of mine has a camping trailer above Williamsport in Gains and hunts in Latonia and we are going to try there for yotes. He see's and hears them regularly while deer hunting there. Not too far from you. Lots of goodlooking terrain.
Are you entering any of the PA yote contests? There's 2 or 3 comming up and 2 of them are near you.

we had great night the other night 51 degrees light rain 10 stops saw 6 foxes killed three, we stopped early since we all got one save some for next time. It was one of best nights we had success wise i think the most we ever saw is 12 in one night. it was weird night one came directly down wind from us like a train. the last one held up at 150 yrds we walked 100 yrds and it came running full bore right at us to 10 feet, big mistake. it was very dark night though. keep trying that is half the fun.

I will take you up on that. You could have all my ice in exchange for 45 degree temp!
In my area, it is dangerous just to walk out to your car. My dog was out for a few hours today. Came back w/bloody paws from all the ice. I am sure a few critters are feeling the same.
I took a spill the other night while calling. Got up to find my scope mount dislodged from the receiver. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif So anyone who is out in the thick of it, be safe! It only takes one slip to have an all nighter. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
I've got a problem overdressing in this warm weather. My brain says Janurary and I dress thinking the temps will start to fall, then factor in motionless hunting for 30-45 minutes at a clip thinking the cold will settle in on ya but never does. My other problem is believing the weather channel.
The news blames the weather change on the Earthquake and Sunami stating it totatly knocked the earth of its axis. :eek:

The one thing I would really like is for this rain to ease up just a wee bit. It's one thing to get soaked earning it and another when ya sit down for it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Jimmie
 
Been having trouble getting them in myself. Plenty of wind to go around, and that is a predator callers worst enemy in my book. Been getting plenty of hangups, but no takers. I have a fox (maybe a den) living in a large brushpile behind my house about 150 yards. I have seen him almost every single day for the past week...and that.......is how the fox laughs. Sure would be nice to get some cold weather to get em good and hungry. Snow would also be welcome. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
 
Bluedog-I hear we are supposed to see the mercury fall by the weekend. I just looked at the weather on line and here is the rundown on highs and lows: Thur.61/41, Fri.46/19, Sat.24/12, Sun.26/16, Mon.29/22. :eek: Its about time. The weather in Red Lion should be the same. I'm in Franklin Co. Exit 5 on I-81. Almost on MD line.
I didn't see any precip thou. I wish there was some snow attached to the low temps.
Looks like I'll be very, very involved in night time activities this weekend. I can't wait, like a kid in a candy store.

That sounds like good enough calling weather to me! I was down in your neck of the woods this past weekend, saw deer and heard turkeys but no coyote action. I am going to try and get back out to Huntingdon county and do some more coyote callin. We were about 25 minutes from the Keystone Country Store down near the Maryland border. Great country, I look forward to hunting it again soon.
 
Bluedog-Sounds like you were in my back yard almost. I hunt several counties including Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon. When I go to Huntingdon I hunt Jacks Mt. Each year I see and hear yotes there while deer hunting. I'm going to try for yotes there one of these days.
I also hunt the family farm in Berkeley Springs, WV. Its only 45 minutes West of Greencastle and I've killed most of my fox there. They were bad for a while. For 5 years they had the bunnies wiped out and now they are re-established but the grouse are still wiped out. Used to jump them all the time and haven't seen one for close to 4 years now. Haven't seen any on the neighbors farms either.We try to take care of the habitat by selective logging and planting food. Heck, sometimes I won't even pick the field corn. I just leave it for the animals, I usually let a few fields in tall grass for the winter to give small game cover from predators and some extra food. I not only take but also put back.
I'm the only one out of 4 boys in my family that hunts and I intend to keep it up. I've been huntin for 30 years now.

Lungbuster, I'm in Greencastle a few blocks from I-81. 10-12 minutes from you. We should have a good weekend for huntin. The temps I posted have changed as a little. It just wont be as cold as first thought.
I have thought about becoming a Meterologist. Its the only job you can screw up every day and never get fired! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
 
i dont see how this weather affects it that much, they still have to eat everyday or there will die, what time do you hunt, we do well between 7pm-midnight, then again from 3am till sunrise are the times we had the most sighting.

Foxking--I had to have something to blame it on. I couldn't be doing anything wrong. LOL Just seems like the less critters up and about, the harder the predator has to look for food and should be eaiser to coax to the call. Where I've been huntin there is an over abundance of bunnies and ducks. I just heard a duck get nailed by something last night behind my house so this gives me another idea for calling. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

It has been unseasonable here in Virginia like you guy to the north. In fact, I still have frogs out in my yard. I saw a gray running across the yard back before Christmas with a mouth full of frog hanging out of each end. The moles are steady doing some damage to my lawn. This all means way too much easy food for the fox. With a full belly, no need to mess with that distessed bunny or other animals. In cold weather the prey food becomes harder to find, making more of challange for the predators to find dinner.
