Situations like this are why God gave us Claymore mines for night hunting in the 1960's. They usually eliminated the need for a range finder. All you needed was night vision goggles or even just a glint of a shadow moving in front of you and three clicks on the "TV remote".

BOOM!!

Maybe he's using something like a .300BO in an AR with a crazy high sight height? I can throw a rock flatter than one of those can shoot. I could see needing a rangefinder for one of those under just about any conditions. Makes the midrange trajectory on a longbow with a 1,000 gr. arrow look like a frozen rope...

yeah no kidding. I am big fan of RF binoculars, the swaro el range specifically. but I would say this, your desire is somewhat unique. IMO you probably don't want to be shooting that far at night. Your going to need to identify the animal but even beyond that be able to find it and retrieve it. beyond that animals respond better at night to calling, you simply most likely don't need to range anything at the ranges your shooting at. I think my 223 is good to at least 250 yards without hold over. never hunted with a thermal but have hunted a couple times with bright lights and trying to make a shot even at 250 is kinda like aiming at glowing eyes and guessing where best to aim at the animal in the inky darkness, fogettabout trying to find it.

even better, eat a ribeye and go night night, and hunt when its light outside.
