Need new hunting knife

Needing a new knife for this next season and the rest after that. Would like something that is easy to sharpen but holds an edge. S30V steel? 3.5 inch or more blade. Folding or fixed either way will work. Anything along those lines.

Since I like fixed blades for hunting,,, in that price range I'll suggest Knives of Alaska's D2 Alpha Wolf.
I tried to post a couple of different links but they don't work on this site. You can find em allot of places from $70-$80 though. (Cabelas has em for a little over $70 with free shipping.

Buck Woodsman or Vanguard are another good value and have one of the best warranties ever.

ETA,,,, I don't own that model of KOA but I do have their caper which I'm really impressed with (plus I like D2 steel) so if I was looking that would be at the top of my list.

I do however own both of the Bucks and can tell you they'll get the job done.
The Vanguard's a better big game skinner but bigger than I like for predators and/or small game.
The Fieldmaster's a nice size for small game and plenty for field dressing chores.
I've had the Fieldmaster for close to 50yrs and the Vanguard for about 30.

"Hunting knife" covers a lot of ground, can you expand on the intended uses for your new knife?

While it's true that the old Buck Lock Back's are versatile work horse's at a great price there are a LOT of better choices for strictly hunting.
(Like the KOA Alpha Wolf.)

Course that's just my opinion.

This is too vauge, can you be more specific of what you are going to do with it?

I feel that a good all around knife has to have a more rounded up tip. I mean the ones above are nice, but for skinning something out, and getting it out of the field, points cause holes.

Knives of alaska makes great knives that i only sharpen once a year, and skin out several elk and a pile of coyotes with.

I like the Elk hunter for just a general knife. But, Sog has one that has lights, and i find it kind of handy since more times than not, i am standing there in the dark skinning with a head lamp.
(also hand for finding it if you set it down, and it slips or slides)

To be fair, i have a bag of knives and each one is specific for it's use and purpose.

I have knives to process Elk, and then knives for skinning coyotes(2 types) One for making cuts, and one for skinning. The skinner is a rounded nose muskrat knive from Knives of Alaska and for skinning, it's hard to beat. It's small light and something that you can hold for ever in your hand and not get tired.
Good luck.

Drop point is the most versatile blade design made,,,, period.
And that's exactly what the KOA Alpha has.

And if the Vanguard is to "pointy" for you,,,,, you obviously don't know squat about blade design.

A "lighted handle"???? Now there's a gimick if I ever heard of one.

Pull up Rainshadow's name from the member list here...He produces some excellent knives for a variety of purposes and within your price point...
The top one in the photo below is one of his "Utility" knives that he made for me...All three were made by him...but it is the one that always goes out with me in the field....I've had it for several years and it still has it's original edge...

I like a fixed blade best, if for nothing else, for the clean up afterwards
I think I can clean and skin a critter in less time than it takes me to clean a folder after cleaning a deer
Give me a dropped point fixed blade with good steel and I'm happy

I'd opt for the vanguard with the s30v steel!

Rosewood Vanguard

Rubber Vanguard s30v

I have a Koa alpha wolf that I absolutely loved, until I got a rubber handled Alaskan guide vanguard like is in the link above. Both are great and I in my eyes you can't go wrong with either.

I second the alpha wolf by knives of alaska if you want to stay under 100. I use mine everyday and by far the handiest knife I have had.

Havalon is what I use most for field dressing and butchering now though.
