Thanks for the info everyone. The coyote in my Avatar is one that was killed less than two weeks ago and is a good example of the norm around here. But the one that I saw is closer to the color of the one Byron is holding. It was dark Charcoal with a light belly and I am almost positive that its tail was light colored as when it ran it raised it which was very visible in my scope. But guys I telling you it was also scary how big this thing was. It is by far the biggest coyote that I have ever seen. I have replayed it in my mind and the face was "coyote", it was looking right at me. I went out tonight in the same area I saw it and did alittle calling with no success. I think now that this may be the one that has barked at me several times here recently. Sort of "hey, just letting you know I'm here" bark with very short or no howling.
Twenty years ago we didn't have any coyotes but we were infested with red foxes. It was so bad that one year my father and several neighbors killed over a hundred fox. They were living (very well)off of the high number of chicken houses in the area which at that time all used open pits to dispose of dead chickens(before composting). Then about ten to fifteen years ago the foxes disappered and we started seeing random coyotes alot along with some wild dogs. THe coyotes never bother much, except the foxes I am guessing, but the dogs would often kill newborn calves. Now twenty years later you hardly ever see a fox and for example, Last week I stood out in my yard at 12am and listened to four packs and one single coyote having there nighty, and I mean nightly long distance phone call. I began hunting coyotes about two years ago after we had several come way to close to the house. I started out calling and had little (no)luck. The only way I have been able to call one in is with a challenge howl off of a mouth call (no Fox success yet) and then I get a male from time to time. Now that isn't working anymore and they are extremely skidish. I have recently made all my kills at night with a light and no calling. I don't care what anyone says they are just too well fed to come to a call. I have my own business and I am not at home as much as some of my neighbors who see the coyotes on a regular basis each day. But there are very few days that I can't call one of my farmer neighbors and not have them tell me where they saw them today. I even had an elderly neighbor call the other day after she heard a gun shot and say "did you get that coyote"? She went on to say she had just watched six in a field behind her house not long before she heard the shot and she assumed it was me. Well back to the point I have seen many coyotes (no where near as many as many of you) but this one was much much different and I sure hope we run into each other again, just at 50+ yards I hope.
