I would like to get some more reviews on the Burris Eliminator 3 scope. 4-16x50 range finder scope. I hope some folks got some of these scopes for xmas last year and would like some NEW feed back.
I am looking to put this scope on my Tikka 3 in 243 cal. I will be using this gun for deer and coyotes only. I will be hunting IN THE STATE OF ND. Really cold weather there but also some warmer states like IL and NV. 8 years ago went with Nikon range finder scope but just could not get it to range in cold ND weather.
At 55 years old reduced my gun inventory and want to spend money on this scope. I found out you can only shoot 1 gun at a time and thought I would try the ranger finder type scope one more time.
I've put a few hundred rounds on mine so far. But it's on a 223 shooting p dogs. Longest kill so far is 650. Longest this morning was 386yds. I haven't stretched it out because I'm shooting some light bullets. One down side to this scope is the "dark" image on cloudy days. This is in comparison to my Leica binos which are 15x. The scope mounts leave something to be desired and when mounted per the instructions you use a shim that is included. I had POI changes the first 2 times out so I removed the shim and mounted it directly to my rail. (I have a rail on top of my flat top ar) the scope mounts too low to mount directly to a flat top ar and too high on a rail mount so I have to use an adjustable cheak piece. Some complain about the bulk but I use bulky scopes on other rifles so it doesn't bother me. Range finding ability is excellent compared to my leica which surprised me. One draw back to shooting p dogs is that the cross hairs are relatively thick. For a deer/coyote rifle I think this would be awesome and I plan to get another for my coyote rifle.
To summarize :
Shim- DON'T USE
glass - below average especially at the price point
Function-awesome and easy to use
Bulk and weight- shut up and hit the treadmill fatty!
scope caps- junk
Adjustable objective- id prefer a side knob.
Watching blitzkings create acrobatic vermin- second best stress reliever known to man!
....mounted the Burris Eliminator3 on my Smith and Wesson M&P10. Found that using the stock mounts it was way to low to be able to access the charging handle so picked some Burris 1/2" risers to put between the rail and the scope. No problem with the scope, but the risers I got were loose as heck on the rail!
Crimped them down and was able to get them tight and the scope mounted at my local gunsmith here in Dickinson. He bore sighted it for me and today it was off to the range to tweak it.
You have a provided almost a book of different factory(Store Bought) loads that you input into info into the scope. Since i was just sighting in at 25yds...then 100 I shot Winchester 7.62X51 147gr ball. At 25yds to check the boresight and then at 100yds dead on. Today there was hardly any wind so used the laser on the 200yd targets.
The scope corrected for the added 100yds and also calculated wind at that distance. Since there was no wind....well...under 10kts...I just sighted the dot and let her go.
With a bone stock M&P10 shooting light target loads I was impressed.
The optics are good even into low light conditions..however I will probably instead of using a red/green LED at night to use this scope go with thermal in the PRO 640 as that is less crap hanging off the rifle.
I really like the reticle on this sight...as well as the fact that you can adjust the brightness of the aiming points when you are under low light conditions. Had it out in the front yard looking around and the OLED's can be backed down to almost nothing letting you see what you are looking at with an aimpoint.
Hope to head down the Bayou maybe Sunday and range out to 900yds or so and set up a target so I can further tweak this scope. With this round I am thinking that's about max. One other thing....if your are able to range out to 1200yds it will give you the range. BUT...if the caliber you have programmed in won't reach that far it will let ya know!!
