Need skunk calling advise

I just got back from a weekend at the cabin and a skunk has taken up residence under the cabin. I would like to try to call it out some evening and shoot it a safe distance from the property. Anyone have skunk hunting experience or recomendations on another approach.

I would try baiting over calling. A can of tuna or sardines should do the trick. Lure it out and trap it or shoot it.

Put some dry cat or dog food where you want to shoot the skunk at and check it several times during the night. One of my friends killed 7 skunks in one week because they would be outside his door eating cat food. One morning last week his dog got sprayed by a skunk that was eating cat food so I went out there that night and we saw the skunk walkin down his drive way so we put an end to his dog spraying career.

I've had success with a garbage can with a tight fitting lid.
Place some bait in the can, sardines or such. Place a board like a 1X6 from the ground to the rim of the can. The skunk will walk up the board and drop into the can. Put the lid on the can and haul the little stinker off someplace whee he will be appreciated. Like the Mother in Law's house. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

just shoot them where they stand go out next morning and pick them up with a snow shovel and discard as far away and down wind from your home. dont jiggle them to much on the shovel. lol. i have been told if you shoot a skunk in the head it will not spray dont know if this is true or not never tried it . i just shoot to get them out of here.

The garbage can thing works if you fill it part way with water, enough water so he has to swim until he is tired then he just kind of floats, and you can discard him without getting sprayed.

I used to have an urban varmint removable business. I have killed more skunks than I care to think about, usually in a Tomahawk live trap. A 22 to the head= instant death and 99/100 times a nice dose of the green stuff. I can smell it just thinking about it.

The garbage can trick will work well and if you put the lid on carefully without showing yourself to the skunk he will likely not spray. Carry the can very carefully and avoid bumping the can. Any bump will likely lead to a spray.

The water in the can will also help. I have never done it for skunks but it does a number on pot guts. Do the same thing but use worms for bait and a 5 gal bucket!

A word of caution, Do not shoot the skunks by your cabin, the smell will persist for quite a long time. If you do get skunk odor around try to find some neutroleum-alpha. It is hard to find but can be found online or at some vets. Hydrogen peroxide will also help a bit when mixed with backing soda and a bit of water.

Good Luck!!!

Im gonna give you some advice. It might be some of the best advice you have gotten so far. Whenever you call it in and shoot it; I would be far, far away. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I know its not the advice you wanted but its helpful advice nonetheless. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I shot one in the head about 75 yards behind my house last year, and for 2 days we could smell it in the house. I don't know how to avoid the smell but be sure that your wife will not smell it or well... lets just say she won't be happy.

the only near scent free way I have done it is, 1 in a live trap, then just set the trap in your stream, and let nature take its course, and the trash can with water..... they do not see it as an immediate threat so.. they just swim and swim and swim.... and float

We used a trap that a guy made. The body of the trap was a small diamater galvanized culvert. It had a screened hinged door on the exit end and a trap door on the entrance that was tripped by the skunk when he tried to get to the food in the back. The key was the diameter of the pipe was small enough he could go in but he could not raise his tail to spray. I would guess the trap was around 30" long and a 8" - 10" in diameter? It worked for us (once.) We used cat fod and tuna. Both worked well, cats and 1 skunk.

There was a skunk living under our shed when I was a kid (maybe 14 yrs old). There was 2 holes burrowed under the shed on opposite sides. I ran the hose in one hole and stood back 30 yds and watched the exit hole with my 10/22. I was expecting to shoot one, but I ended up shooting 3 of them, a mother and two young ones.

I don't know if this would apply to the skunks under your cabin or not, but if it does it's fast and effective..

The best way we have found to kill a skunk without getting sprayed is shoot it from the side. Take out both lungs and they can't spray.. I don't know if this is always true but it has worked on the couple we've had in our traps..

Good luck and if you do get sprayed use Hunter's Specialties Scent Away soap.. Wash all you clothes in HS scent Away laundry soap.. I got sprayed by 2 skunks in one day while pheasant hunting a couple years ago and this worked great. Washed my hunting stuff twice and took one really good shower and the smell was gone..

I had a rabid skunk get into my dog kennel a few weeks ago and I shot it as it charged at me with my 12 ga with 4 shot in it. Its head was about five foot from the end of the choke tube.. It never sprayed at all. Matt

Hoooo the skunk stories I could tell! lol

I haven't had much success in calling them, but the best way I know of is to get down next to the opening below your cabin and take a deep breath and yell "HEY SKUNK!!!"

That should work. Then follow one of the recipes above to remove the smell from your face!! LMAO /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

My golden retriever Ruby got sprayed real good a couple days ago out by the henhouse. I looked on-line and found a recipe that consisted of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, & dish-washing soap. We (my daughter and I) mixed it up and used it just as the instructions said and it worked like a charm. And believe me, she got it good. Had to bathe her in the house because it was 25degrees outside. Poor dog was down in the dumps for 2 days. Stinkinest dang cat she ever met /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gifBTW, I agree with the others about baiting the little stinkers, Get real close and take their head off with a 12 guage turkey load and I havent seen one spray yet.

With shunks being know rabies carriers, head shooting a skunk is a not the best idea as the rabies virus is concentrated in the spine and brain. Spreading brain matter around your yard is just a good way to spread rabies in your area.

A live trap is your best bet. After they are in the trap, slowly approach the trap talking to the skunk in quiet soft tones and spread a tarp or blanket over the trap. Back your car to the trap and run a vaccun cleaner hose under the blanket to the exaust pipe and let it run for a half hour.

Do not dispose of the animal by just throwing it out in the woods, bury it deep or check with a conservation officer to see if anyone is doing rabies monitorring in the area and would take the carcass.
