Need skunk calling advise

trap them and just shoot em with a twenty-two in the lungs.....only had one spray /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gifit was my first and it was because i shot it from like 50 yards and hit it in the head...the others i would get about 20 foot and if his tail goes up then back away quickly..and after you shoot it back up slowly or stand still..it might spray while its dying if it can pinpoint the thing that hurt it...

it will take some nerve though /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I've shot about a dozen of them over the last few years. My technique is to use a night vision device to locate them and walk up to about 30' away. They will be oblivious if you don't make a lot of noise. Put the NVD down, and shoot him with 17HM2 or HMR semi-auto rifle with a flashlight mounted. Light him up with the flashlight - they will freeze long enough to get a fix and shoot. Here is where the semi-auto beats a bolt gun. Keep firing until he stops moving. Sometimes that's one shot, other times it takes several. I've never had one spray in this scenario, however they will start leaking if you leave them overnight. I've also had other animals come and start eating him, opening the stink sack.

So far this year I have shot about 15 skunks and all of them have sprayed even the one I shot in the head with the 223. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gifThe last one I shot was last sunday I was coming home from a friends house when I saw one standing in the ditch. So I pulled into the trail road we take when we shoot PD's about 50 yards from the skunk and got the 17 out.I wasnt to worried about it gettin away since it was in the middle of the day. When I looked up to see where it was going it was headed right towards the truck about 25 yards away and gettin closer. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gifSo I had to hurry and load the clip and by the time I had one ready to go he was about 15 yards away and still heading towards me until I put a Winchester 17gr V-MAX right between his eyes.I dont think it was anyones pet either cause he still had his stink sacks in him cause he stunk really bad after he died. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I tryed a double lung and heart shot on a 50 yard skunk this evening and it still sprayed. It was out in a wheat field just wondering around and the 17HMR put an end to its stinky career. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gifIt killed it so quick that it never even moved after it hit the ground but it still managed to spray. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

Good point about the rabies, I hadn't thought of that. I spose any critter that takes a nibble of the bits and pieces would be at risk.
I really like the culvert live trap idea as well as the trash can full of water. Good work ay.

We baited them using tuna when I was younger. We'd set it out in my friend's backyard and just check it with a light every half an hour or so. Then we'd just shoot them with a pellet gun in the head because we were in city limits. But we only did it when the house was upwind.

I used to build the live traps out of plywood, all sides and the door. I would use a tuna can with small nail holes punched in the top for the bait. The skunks would walk in and the door would flop and the darn thing would be in an enclosed box. They would never spray unless you would get to shaking the box too much when you were moving it. Remove from around the house and open door. Skunk takes a few steps out of box and 12ga. game over. This works very well for getting skunks out of your yard and not having to deal with the smell in the yard or house. Good luck!

slowly approach the trap talking to the skunk in quiet soft tones and spread a tarp or blanket over the trap?

What subjects do skunks like to hear about anyway? I guess quiet soft tones are better than yelling at it and calling it names. Sing it a pretty song or something maybe?
