I'm gonna be purchasing a 308, gonna be spending around 1500... that's my budget. Would like to see pics of what everyone has around that price range so I can get an idea of the make/model of what I want... shot group pics, gun pics, info, all is appreciated! Thanks guys! If it helps at all... currently looking at a 700 xcr, an tikka t3 varmint.

I like the XCR. Good rifle. I don't have a Rem bolt gun, but I have an old side action 760. It works for my brush gun quite well. The 308 caliber is pretty good, all around. Try 165 SST or 165 HPBT Sierra. It seems the 308 and 165 gr pills go hand in hand!

The tikkas are usually shooter, but I think they still have that plastic bolt shroud. You WILL have to replace! Look up tikka bolt shrouds, pull up a seat and a bowl of popcorn. Other then that, they are good guns. I guess there is a company making aluminum replacements for the Tikka. GetFoxy could tell you more about the tikka and issues there of, if any.

What you looking at for glass?

I know Gary. I'm awaiting his in input...

. As of right now I have a 6-24x44 Smith&Wesson mil-dot to put on it, but eventually would probably switch to a Nikon 6-18x40 mil-dot.

Not much I can say here....as to the aluminim bolt shroud...Id say it would be a wise investement....I got the Tikka off of a Pm member here and he replaced the shroud with the aftermarket aluminim one after the plastic one broke twice if I remember correctly...maybe he will chime in. This is on a .243 btw.

Even though my Tikka has been in the classifieds, it has nothing to do with it being a Tikka. I would and probably will buy another...oh yea..after thinking long and hard I figured I better keep it. For 500 some dollars I dont think you could buy a better rifle. Its light, has the slickest bolt I have ever felt, and it weighs in at just a tad over 6#....put the money you save towards some nice glass.
Plus they are shooters

I have a Kimber Longmaster Classic with a Zeiss 6.5-20 Z-1000 on it. It shoots quite well, but the scope is pretty tricky. I wanted to learn to shoot distances more accurately and bought the Z-1000 reticle in hopes of learning a bit more, but it has honestly confused me more than helped me.

But here is one of my groups to look at:

I'm partial to my CZ550. It's been a shooter since day one and I just recently added M1 turrets to the Leupold scope so I've been anxious to get out and try it.

Do you want a heavy weight .308, or a lighter weight for walking?

Remington VS, .308 $400 (after I sold original stock.)
McMillan A5, $500
Badger M5 bottom metal $330.

Total = $1230

That thing is pretty cool. I held a White Feather edition and almost drooled, and the military stuff really isn't really my cup of tea. Well, some of it....

I want a heavy barrel for prone or bench shooting. I like the all black look, but a B&C with the spider web paint job in black an yellow or red an black I think would be saaawweeeeeeet! Lime green an black would be ideal but haven't ever seen one.

This is my only .308 right now. I have $920 into it plus my bedding job and recoil pad installation. It's not in the same catagory as a real custom rifle, but it does shoot very well with certain loads. The trigger is set at very crisp 1.5 lbs. On a reasonably nice day I can get less than .250 3 shot groups at 100 meters if I don't let get too hot. The barrel is a free-floated heavy contour but not a bull barrel. My budget was tighter than yours so you have some extra room to wiggle on components.

Howa 1500 .308 Supreme Thumbhole Varminter $550
Mueller 4-16X50mm AO Tactical Mil-Dot IGR $200
Timney Trigger $80
Bedding Kit $20
Leupold Mounts (Modified for 20 MOA) $40
Limbsaver Pad $30
Total $920 Empty Weight- 11.35 lbs.

My kid has a Rem 700 XCR in 30-06, With a Nikon 4.5x14 Buckmaster Mil-Dot this is one sweet rifle, I would recommend this gun to anyone. My plans include getting a 308 AR Varmint from Rock River, the price for gun alone is around $1500, plus whatever I decide for a scope.

The local game warden friend of mine has one of these in his truck. We tried to shoot jackrabbits at 200 yards with it but only connected about 25 percent of the time. I was not impressed with his scope mount but it was a hoot to shoot.

I was shooting the Howa above at the same jacks with 130 grain soft points and it was blowing them into big chunks without much problem. Trying to find your brass from the SOCOM in 2 feet of snow is not fun in the wind when it's 12 degrees above zero.

Am I better off just buying a 308 upper? I've also pondered that route but I think I'd get better accuracy out of a bolt... I hate making decisions...

I have a friend with a RRA, 308. Its sports a 24 inch heavy barrel. Granted, it weighs a ton, but it shoots extremely well. The RRA in 308 is a little tough to find and kinda pricey, but worth it.

youd need to get a large well lower for your upper then too. just buy a used rifle and build it. im doing a mauser right now that i have about 700 into the barreled action and wood remington 798 stock. ill put 400 or so into a scope and then a decent thumbhole stock. im figuring about 1300 total
