That is what I was about to say.............

For that kind of money, you might be better off building one to your specs...

The one I just acquired has a Steyr-Mauser action with a Parker Hale M2 Sniper barrel and a Boyd's stock...It's been blue printed, bedded, free floated and had a re-worked Timney trigger installed...The person that had the work done by his gun smith included the receipts and without the stock, it ran about $900..

It's heavier than I would want to carry for a long distance, but really steady in a rest..

Okay, I'm gonna build. Just don't know how extreme. That Mauser build looks pretty sweet, but the Remington 700 just speaks to me. As for bullets, are there pretty decent shooting hollow points out there or what do u guys suggest? Mostly gonna be a target gun, but I'm sure I'm gonna wanna make it taste blood. I've ALWAYS been a small caliber rifle guy, so I'm open to ideas an wanna learn about the larger aspects.

168 Sierra MK. Not a big game bullet, but should be fine on yotes and smaller targets. I have never seen a 308 that did not like 165-168 gr pills.

+1 for the amax. My buddy shot a small for at roughy 80 yards with one out of a 30-06. Very Nasty exit wounds and very mushy insides

I'd rather a 7-08 or 260 than a 308 and I own all 3......

If your building now, take 2mg's advice. 7-08 or 260. Both are seemingly more forgiving with loads and have a slew of stuff available to cook up some awesome groups. Go to thesnipershide.com and read all the info over there. With today's awesome bullet selection, it seems the 308 is becoming obsolete.

The mauser builds are pretty cool, I have been using one in 308 with a 30" barrel to shoot this year. The downside is you have to watch out during load development, high pressure develops much sooner with a mauser than modern rifle actions. I would go with a rem 700, savage, howa, or winchester.

Are we talking about the effects of high pressure, or the high pressure itself? I guess I don't understand what your getting at with that statement. There are also a big differences between the various Mauser actions including the metallurgy and design.

I am talking about the high pressure itself. I use 43 gr. of varget with a 175 smk and have had signs of high pressure, sticky bolt lift. Yes, there are many different mauser actions, made by many different companies. I have been using an argentine mauser action. I am stating that modern actions can tolerate higher pressures than a dated military action. Alot of modern rifles/actions can use a larger powder charge without signs of high pressure.
I am not saying mauser actions are no good I am saying they are different than modern rifle actions and need to be loaded and treated differently.

My neighbor has a Rem 700 VTR that I worked up a load for with Varget and 168's that shot tiny groups, he wants to sell it because of age and crazy sick wife.

I'm building a custom now or I would buy it myself.

Send me a pm if y0u are interested and I will get you two to hook up.
