I picked up some Burlap the other day while out running around, and thought I would try and get an old Military style trench coat, so I stopped by a Army-Navy store, and they don't have any in stock and don't know when they might have any back in.

So what other types of jackets would be good to build a Gillie suit??

MARK-N-TENNESEE,
The problem with long trench coats is you will not be able to crawl when your stalking and the trench coat can get a bit HOT! with all the burlap which I might add, I would use shreaded material and camo spray paint, Then that burlap. Get yourself a two piece pull over (wind breaker) type and pants, this seemed to work best for me when I was into snipering, You the can put your warmies under them. So just get ex-large from your size and tke it from there.Plus the hood on the top works good at keeping the creepers out Chiggers and such!

Good luck and post some pic's when you get it done /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

There is an other option. You can buy a commercial net poncho from www.bushrag.com

They also have a net jacket. You will need to get the head cover if you get the poncho net.

Cost is around 15 for the poncho and 20 for the jacket.

The poncho style is great if you are sitting. You just slip it on and off as you go to and from your stands. They roll up and stuff inside a pack or bag.

It is a lot easier to tie the burlap to the netting than it is to sew or attach it to a coat or shirt. Been there, done that.

Just an idea to kick around for ya. Good luck which ever way you go, and make sure we get some pics of the completed project!

Bushrag makes a great product. If you want to see their rifle rag, go to the other thread on ghille suits here started by Savage Man. My AR is at the bottom. If you are having trouble finding a trench coat, most use coveralls or a pair BDUs. Then find netting with squares no larger than 2"x2" to attach to your outfit. Lide THO said, you then attach your burlap to the squares.

I would try finding a drab or brown poncho. Grey works too.Even a xx large hooded sweatshirt. Use the burlap you bought and cut into 2-3" strips of about 2 -3 feet. Buy some green dye at wallyworld. Die 1/4 of your cut burlap in a sink with enough dye to color the burlap.Play arround and test a few strips to see what shade you are getting.Do 1/4 of your burlap dark green. Then drain half the sink, then add water until a much lighter shade and dip 1/2 of whats left. Then do the water down method again until it barely shades the burlap. Oh yea, save some strips of raw burlap for good measure. You can buy a cheap click n sew thingy to attach the burlap quick and build the suit as you go_Or use a hot glue gun.A sewing hook and fishing line works too. After you get a good mess of guilley going. Put it on and walk arround your back yard with your rifle and a pair of scissors. You will then see where it needs trimmed. Just don't let your neighbors see you cause they will think bigfoot has a gun! LOL
put alot arround your head and shoulders, thats what is most apparent on a human in the woods. jerryboy

Remember not to do your whole suit in burlap. Mix it up with some dried palm leaves. I forget what they are called on the packages but they are cut in thin strips about 1/4" wide and 20" long. Come in 2 colors: Natural (OD), and bleached (tan). Stuff is cheap and you buy it in any craft store. Just snake it thru the netting and tie it half way, put a drop of glue on knot. Good luck. If you want more info on this give me a shout.

I went to a crafts store and bought a long strand of plastic ivy. Pulling all the "leaves" off of the "vine" I used fishing line to sew them onto an old camo jacket that had faded very badly. (Everyone has one of those) I then added some strips of brown burlap on the arms, shoulders, and back and made an excellent ghillie/bowhunting jacket.

Just my two cents.
