Need to eradicate coyotes....

We have a farm here in Ga and its being taken over by coyotes. Ive never hunted them specifically but I have now declared war on them. This is how Ive started. I have a meat processor near by and Ive been picking up 55 gal. drums of scarps and dumping them in the edge of the woods along side of one of our pastures. One drum is pretty much cleaned up in 5 days. I have a box stand that is just over 100 yards from the pile. I would love to have some opinions from you guys as to what would be my best way to go about hunting them. Would the stand work or would a 223 run them off and keep them from returning to the pile? Could I spend the night and they keep coming back all night? Could I hang a amber light over the pile and just leave it there? Any and all advice is welcome.

I read the post about the frozen coyotes but its not hardly cold enough here to keep them frozen long enough to stand up. I guess I could put them in the freezer and take them out when I go.

Heck ya, that'll work.

Are you married and is she an understanding woman?

I did the same thing at my house. I got 2 big bast**ds running my back yard. I set out the deer parts from a doe I got a couple weeks ago and sat for 4 hrs one night. NOTHING!!! Got up the next morning and the 40lb rib cage had been carried off. DANG IT. I need to get a trail cam to see what time they are coming through. They always seem to be one step ahead of me. I would say stick a trail cma up and see what time they are coming through. Do a set with a good wind and slaughter them. A challenge bark should help.

Ive got a very understanding wife. She has to dig through a bobcat and several deer heads and a few other critters just to get to the hamburger meat to cook supper.

Here's another thought Jeff.

Do ya reckon dumping out 55 gallon barrels of scrap meat might have anything to do with the farm becoming, in your words "taken over by coyotes"??

I think I know where I would hang around if'n I was a coyote. Jeffs buffet would be lookin pretty darn good.

I just started dumping out the scraps early last week. Thought it would be a good way to get them concentrated in the one area without having to run and call so much.

You're correct. It will concentrate em. It will also very likely bring more into the area. Actually kinda counter productive for trying to reduce numbers.

Coyotes will come from MILES around to feed on a cow carcass here on the plains of CO. They'll feed on that carcass until there's nothing left and then move on. Keep throwing cow carcasses there and they have no reason to move on.

Baiting coyotes is a good way to kill a few. Not such a good way to get rid of them. That make any sense?

You need to get to your shooting spot without being seen, heard, or smelled then check several times in the course of several days to see when they are coming in. I have shot them as late as 10:30 A.M. or around mid-night. it depends on which part of their range you are in. I haven't had much luck getting them to come to a call as long as there is bait left.

Need to eradicate coyotes... Good luck with that; there have been millions of dollars spent in that cause by the federal and different state governments at various times. It hasn’t happened yet and you probably aren’t going to get it done either. Especially by creating a buffet diner for them. If you want to and need to cut down the numbers do two things; quit feeding them and get an experienced trapper working the place.

Bingo.

Shooting's fun. Trapping is effective. In the 70's and 80's when coyote were worth something we got literally 6x as many coyotes trapping as shooting. Shoot one, trap 6.

We use to do a lot of trapping for fox back in the 80s and as teenagers made great money doing it. But its a lot more trouble to trap coyotes and you can only do it during trapping season not year round.

OK the bait pile isn't good for eradication. But it should make for lots of fun and shooting for me and my 13 year old for a little while, and will give us a few pretty hides to hang on the wall. So if I hang an amber light over the bait and just leave it hooked up to a battery will that work or will they stay away from it? I even thought about hanging a stand over it and taking my bow out on a good moonlit night.

get the biggest treble hook you can find tie some braided cable to it, hang it from a tree limb about 42 inches from the ground, use chicken breast as bait and see what you catch in the morning!!!!

You might just catch something you don't want to, like a criminal charge or civil lawsuit.

You can get rid of a few at time around the bait pile. Just put out a good amount of tannerite and when they get grouped up eating good shoot the tannerite.

This post may or may not be taken seriously depending on your views about it.

I do have to be careful as the DNR has ... what should I say.. been keeping an eye on our area for a while now. I have no earthly idea why. Yes the tannerite is something that I had seriously considered. I do have a case or two left. I also want to shoot at least one with my 50 BMG and a frangible bullet.

+1 on the trail cam idea. I use one at my bait pile just to see when they are coming in to feed. I have lots of pics of them and coons feeding at all hours of the night and early morning. Just today I had two yotes there at about 3:15 in the afternoon but unfortunately I wasnt on stand. They seem to be getting braver although as they are showing up during the day now.
