Joetuc, I've been doing this for a very, very long time, and for ANYONE to say that a yote "HIT ANYWHERE" (by .17 or ANY caliber) and turns them to mush is one (poor) B.S.er. And anyone that believes that, is either lacking in experience, knowledge or is just plain gullable or worse.

I have made poor hits on yotes with lots of calibers, including 300 win mag, only to see them run off and never seen again.

On the other hand, a properly hit yote goes down like a rock....with nearly any caliber. Period!

BTW, I've got a bridge in Arizona I'd like to sell. It'll keep the powder dryer!!

Yote, Say pard looks like your powder is as wet as
the water under your bridge, I love it when you old timers come off like that. my my you shot a big ol 300 win mag wow!!! am i ever proud of you.
BOY i wish i had a big ol 300 win mag to shoot a yote with. I can tell you are a real old timer in the world of shooting and i'm sure you think you know every thing there is to know about every thing in the world,,As i have read some of your post's and am very impressed with your wisdom and knoledge,Just wished i was just half as smart as you.I really think you ought to go back and read my post's with a open mind and give a little thougt to what i said and maybe you could come to another conclusion. I'm not trying to impress any one (i don't have to) I think i've been at the game of yote taking as long as any one on these forums. If you doubt my ability on any thing i said or do i extend a invition to Tucumcari,N.M.
I make one hell of a good friend. Joe

RAN UTAH,Sorry about this defugilty,I should have dismissed the whope thing, I do not intend to make trouble for any one. It will not happen again

A 100 yard shot limit!??? I have shot 3-4 so far at 270-320yds, works for me. Only one got up due to a low shot from behind as it went over a hill. At 300 yds I have .5 to 1.5" of drop!!! That is flat shooting.T.20

Bayou....Where about in Cypress are ya??? I hunt around the shaw road area sometimes. And live near cypress rosehill 2920 area. Just wonder if we have run into one another and not known it...

i think think people who would love to own a 20 tac or the 17 rem would love the 204. it is great in my opion. the round is good well past 300 yards on anyone thing smaller then a yote. i have been shooting and shooting it because i know it takes the 223's 300 yard yote getter and turns the tables to make a 400 yard yote gettinh 204! any one that dose not believe me all i can say is shoot one and find how easy it is to make a long 300 yard shot easy. well i know their are some people who like larger and slower and others that like small and fast. well all i can say to you guys that like large and slow bullets give the 204 or a 17 rem a try you won't be sorry

Quackerbox:

I live just west of Jones Road and just north of Cypress North Houston Road (Mill Ridge Forest). Seems like maybe we talked just after we both signed on here - or maybe a buddy of yours - I remember whoever it was said they had a friend who had just signed on about the same time. Curious - what are you hunting in the Shaw Road area?

FYI - I had a great weekend last weekend - went up in the Panhandle for 4 days and shot PD's with my two sons and my new son-in-law. We had a great time and went through about 1200 rounds of ammo between the four of us during two days of shooting - only bad part is the 2 days of traveling up there and back.

My Rem 700/PacNor Tactical 20 really tears up the PD's. The best part is the recoil is light like a 17, so you get to see them leave the launch pad through the scope.

I just shot my new Ruger 77 Stainless Ultralite 204 Ruger for the first time today at Hotwells. It looks like it will really shoot well with a little tuning - I have dies coming next week and then plan to load my hand-swaged 38 grain HP'S in it. Since getting my first Tac 20 several years ago, I haven't shot much .224 stuff - just my 17's and the 20's. Looks like the 204 will be a great addition.

Take care - BCB

Hey guys, all I can say is this:

I drive a Ford F-350 Power Stroke Diesel, but that Durimax Chevy/GMC sure looks nice!

I like the 204 Ruger but I think I like my 22-250 a little bit better. Doesn’t make me right, just means I’m comfortable with my 22-250.

Everything I ever shot with a Hornady V-Max with a well-placed shot took a dirt nap. Not that a V-Max is the best bullet (though I think it is) I’m sure I would have anchored all those dogs with a Barnes, Nossler or whatever type you prefer. Bottom line is shot placement, not so much the manufacturer.

I guess what I’m getting at is this: it’s all preference.

What works for you might not work for me, I’m not right and you’re not wrong. Oh ya, that goes both ways!

Hunt’em guys, have fun, be safe, and tell us your stories!

Steve

Bayou....I've been without a computer since about september till now. I do know someone else who posts here but does not frequent here much anymore. SBE12ga is the handle (i think) mostly we get coyotes over there at shaw road every now and then we see a fox. WE have not hunted there in some time, we hit it pretty hard for a spell and its only about 100acres. But we face Westborne neighborhood and thats were the critters come from.

Bayou City Boy--what dies did you purchase for your .204? I am thinking about purchasing a .204 rifle (don't know what brand or configurations yet) this summer and am thinking about purchasing the Redding Competition die set for it.

A friend of mine who shoot a Tact 20 for coyotes says the new 35 gr. Berger bullet is VERY fur friendly and knocks the coyotes down on the spot!

Silverfox:

I just purchased the standard Redding FL die set. My main goal at ths time is to get some 222RM brass necked down and formed for the rifle. Since its a light weight sporter barrel, I wasn't interested in BR quality anyway.

If it seeems to be very accurate, I may then go with the competition dies and do a little more work. My main goal in purchasing the Ultralite was to get a 20 caliber calling/walking rifle. I have two heavy barreled Tac 20's to play the accuracy game with. - BCB

PS - the dies and brass came today!!

GENTLEMEN,

I READ WERE SOMEBODY TALKED ABOUT EXPERINCE WITH THESE CALIBERS. I HAVE THEM ALL FROM 17- TO 25/06
AND HAVE KILLED COYOTES WITH THEM ALL. MY PERSONAL FIRST CHOICE IS MY SWIFT I HAVE HAD IT THE LONGEST BUT THE GUN JUST BECOMES PART OF ME WHEN I PICK IT UP. I DON'T OWN THE 204 YET!!!
BUT VERY INTERESTED??? AS FOR THE 17.. HAVE KILLED MORE COYOTES WITH MINE THAN MOST SEE IN A FEW YEARS MY RECORDS SAY 114 SINCE 1999 WHEN I BOUGHT IT. I HAVE NOT LOST A COYOTE TO THIS GUN YET I HAVE LOST A FEW WITH MY 223, 1 LAST SEASON TO MY SWIFT . I THINK A LEG HIT!MY FAULT.. FOR THE WIND IF ITS BLOWING IT WILL AFFECT EVERY GUN DIFFRENTLY. BUT AS FOR EXPERINCE I HAVE SEEN COYOTE GO DOWN WITH A 17 OUT PAST 300 YARDS IN THERE TRACKS WHEN IT COMES TO THE WIND I SHOOT MY 25/06 I ALWAYS TAKE THAT GUN FOR A BACK UP AND THE WIND PROBLEM!!!BEST SOLUTION I HAVE FOUND.LIKE SOMEBODY SAID FORD,CHEVY SHOOT WHAT YOU LIKE JUST HAVE FUN..
THERE IS A GUY THAT LIVES IN NEVADA THAT I THINK HAS A VIDEO OUT HIS NAME IS BLAINE EDDY AND SHOOTS A DAMM LOT OF CRITTERS WITH SMALL CALIBERS LIKE 14'S AND SUCH . NOW THIS GUY KNOWS HIS S... !IF YOU HAVE NO OR VERY LITTLE EXPERINCE WITH CALBERS FROM SUCH AS THE THE 17 OR 20'S YOU DON'T HAVE TO MUCH ROOM TO TALK.
MY PERSONAL EXPERINCE IS I HAVE NOT SEEN A GUN KILL, DROPINTRACKS, MELT , PUTDOWN,DROP COYOTES LIKE A 17 CAL. IT TRULY IS A MUST SEE TO BELIVE. PLUS ALL THIS IS FUN A SMALL QUITE FAST GUN .
BUT AFTER ALL THIS WHEN I GO FOR SERIOUS SHOOTING I TAKE MY SWIFT I HAVE TO SAY IT COME DOWN TO CONFIDENCE IN THE GUN.....
JUST MY OPINION AND MY EXPERINCE.

COYOTEMASTER

Blaine actually lives in Utah. I've got some scenes of him and his Son killing some coyotes with .17 and .14 calibers that will be on our next video. He's the best and most dedicated fur hunter that I personally know. I can't remember his numbers, and I surely wouldn't ever try to speak for Blaine, but I'm pretty sure he's killed over a thousand coyotes with the .17 caliber. I know he killed over a hundred this last fur season. Blaine is one hell of an honorable man too.

DAA. thanks for the info on Blaine I have just meety him in neveada so thought he was from there!
I could'nt agree more every time I have talked with him I have been able to learn alot from him and a great pleasure to be with.

In regards to the number of coyotes Blaine Eddy has taken with the small caliber rifles, I think in the following quote he was referring mainly to .17 caliber. I was asking (on another board) about the effectiveness of the .17 caliber on coyotes:

With regard to persuasive facts as you put it, if killing over 2000 coyotes isnt persuasive enough for you, then perhaps you could tell everyone just what would be enough in your estimation...............Blaine Eddy
We had a discussion going on about the relative merits of the Tactical 20 (SlyDog's favorite caliber for coyotes) and the .17 calibers (Blaine Eddy's caliber).

Those two gentlemen listed lots of bullets, small calibers, and their experiences with them.

There are a lot of you on here with a LOT more experience on coyotes than me, but some are starting to sound like you're after deer or elk.

The 204 doesn't NEED a lot of energy when the bullet is traveling over 4000fps. All it NEEDS to do is penetrate about 1" of flesh and bone then destroy itself, which is what it is designed to do.

Many people talk energy like they are killing an elk, but with big game, penetration is the name of the game. You do not need or always want total penetration on these calibers, so I'd say the hypervelocity shock is as much if not more important (shot placement being equal). Just my experience.

Many calibers will and do get the job done. I have a co-worker that has taken several elk with his 30-30 lever gun, one shot kills. Trails them about 50yds usually. Last year it took him 2 shots to drop a cow elk with his 270 so go figure.

I'm a big bore fan for hunting but the charts don't make one think a 45-70 is effective past 100yds but just don't get in front of that 400gr slug 700yds from the barrel. It WILL do a pass through on you. That is penetration! In my opinion, a coyote shot with a 30-30 will live longer than one shot in the same place with any of the 20-22 centerfires. Much more hyper shock there.

Handirifle--I think the reason folks are concerned about ft. lbs. of energy is not so much for the 100 to 200 yard shots, but for the longer shots. What you need to remember is that once that bullet gets out to 200, 250, 300 yards IT IS NOT travelling 4,000 fps anymore! The farther you get downrange the less energy the bullet will be able to dissipate or transfer into the body of your intended target. It has to have sufficient energy to penetrate the body and for the bullet to expand and do its job. That's what all the flap is over BC, sectional density, ft. lbs. of energy, etc. Terminal Effect!!!
