Looks like Bushmaster is getting into the "calling rifle" business! Byron must be bringing them lots of inquiries!!! Looks like a nice rifle, I like that it has the 1:8 twist and fluted non-chromelined match grade barrel.

About time they did one with an 8 twist and 20 inch tube.

Right on BM /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I wonder what they mean by "Hybrid SAMMI spec chamber"? Maybe similar to a Wylde or Match chamber? If they made one of these in a 16 inch version, I would be all over it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

What I beleive they mean is that it's chambered to allow safe usage of military 5.56mm and commercial .223 ammo. The lower of my Bushy is stamped with both. Rifles stamped .223 only are supposedly not safe to use 5.56 ammo because of the higher pressures.

Don't let me get away with anything fellas, if I'm wrong correct me.

I still can't see a problem with this chambering queston. I have shoot 10's of thousands of rounds in both and have never seen a problem.

I don't know either Steve. I've heard from others, who like you, have shot both and never had a problem. But I sure have read and heard the warning a bunch too. Something tells me that somewhere along the line there was an issue and some lawyer got fat from the settlement and now there has to be a disclaimer or whatever you want to call it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused1.gif

It is an internet problem, plain and simple. 100s of millions of rounds, if not billions, of both ammo have been shot through all the chambers. Zero serious problems. The bottom line is that any ammo that will fit in the magazine will fit in all the chambers. Ammo loaded too long to fit in the magazine is a different question but anybody doing that knows they have to look at leade length.
If you are loading ammo to fit in the magazine, use the shortest leade offered.

Are you talking about shooting 5.56mm military ammo in a .223 Rem. chamber? I was going to ask that question soon anyways, because I'm thinking about a new upper for my spare lonely lower.

Complete uppers are not yet availabe. As soon as all orders are filled for their complete rifles they will start selling uppers. Thats the story from AR-15 web site. Wish they would also do it in a 1:10 or 1:12 barrel.

Using 5.56NATO cartridges in a barrel spec.d for 5.56 is fine and will also allow shooting of .223

The 5.56 has a larger throat and will cause some accuracy deterioration shooting .223 because of the longer jump from the brass to the rifling.

So...if you want an accurate rifle that shoots .223 really well you don't want the 5.56 chamber. Also the chrome lining process creates irregularities that can deminish accuracy so the standard for accuracy is a broach cut in chrome moly steel or stainless. Almost every AR barrel out there in a comlete upper except one uses the lesser quality broach cut including bushy. Want a higher quality barrel...OLY SUM....guaranteed accuracy.

I hope this makes sense. That's why most match or precision AR's are made NOT in the 5.56 chamber.

A gun company that is offering something the customer wants. This must be why Bushmaster sells more AR's than the others. To bad more american gun & car makers didn't do this. I might have purschased this model had it been available a month ago. The Varminter is good but I wanted the 20 " barrel. Armalite got my money because they offered a 20" barrel, a 1" accuracy, and a lifetime warranty.

tripod 3
im lookin into gettin an AR,,,so only bushmaster and armalite are the only ones offering a 20" barrel and does anyone think that there may be a few wrinkles to iron out on bushmasters NEW offering in 20"
Thank you
Bob

ohiobob, There are many 20" barrels offered, but only a few that were factory flat top & non chrome. With AR's you can order almost any configuration. I wanted a factory gun off the shelf first time to experience all features. Now after shooting it I feel the Armalite was a good choice and the only thing that would change is fluting the barrel to reduce weight. My list was narrowed to Armalite, Bushmaster, Rock River, and Dtech here on the board. The Armalite 2-stage trigger felt best to me & the stainless match barrel seemed better. Again the Armalite one piece scope mount was the winner, being strong and clean. The lifetime warranty was great on top of all the great features.

I was looking at a DPMS with a 20" fluted barrel. 1:8 twist, vented tube, and A3 upper. Are the barrels on these DPMS rifles not as good as the others mentioned on this thread? I want to know all of the ins and outs before I spend that much money.

JJFBandit,

I am sure the DPMS barrels are just fine, but it(the DPMS) is a fluted Bull barrel, while the Bushy is a fluted HBAR. The Bushy would probably be a little lighter although i'm not positive. Also the DPMS is a Stainless while the Bushmaster is Chromoly steel, the stainless might be a little more durable against rust and a little easier to clean, but probably not enough difference for the avg. joe to tell.
