New Close Range Varmint Killing Machine

I get a lot of calls about varmints in or around buildings, so I need something accurate, quiet and easy to handle. This M&P Sport fits the bill. :sneaky: At this point, I think I'm going to put a HoloSun red dot on it. Nearly all of my shots are going to be inside 30 yards and quite a few less than 15 feet. (y) I fired 3 shots of subsonic CCI ammo out of it and the action noise is louder than the rifle.

That M&P 15/22 is a hoot to shoot! I have one and have a Sig Romeo 5 dot on top. It is a decent training rifle for quick ups, ect. and cheaper to drill with than my BCM. It is also surprisingly accurate. I think it will shoot at least as well, if not better than, a stock Ruger 10/22. Now, my rifle is pretty darned reliable, but it wasn't at first. At first that sucker jammed and jammed a lot. I was darned aggravated with it, but I did some research and tried one of the remedies, tweak the ejector and replace the extractor. I did both, and that cured the chokes. When loading the rounds in the magazine, they need to be properly stacked and can be a pain in the rear to load. This tool is well worth the money.

Lightnin’ Grip Loader

BTW, I can highly recommend the Sig Romeo 5 also.

That's cool. Though personally I think I'd opt for a bolt action 17hmr suppressed and a PCP .22 cal air rifle for little varmints in and around structures. I've had .22LR richochet too many times.

Interesting choices. I sold a bolt-action 17HMR, for this 22LR, because it was louder. Unfortunately, there's no such thing as subsonic ammo for a 17HMR, because it was built to be a "hot rod". A good PCP rifle will cost as much or more than a centerfire rifle. I looked into a 30 caliber. Interesting ballistics. (y)
I agree about the ricochets, but I make the extra effort to check the background of each shot. :)

17hmr with a suppressor is very quiet. Not quite as quiet as a subsonic .22lr, but very quiet. I can shoot consistent 1" groups at 100 yds with mine, where my 22lr shoots 2"+ groups. Even larger groups when shooting subs. With my 17hmr I've shot rockchucks off a pile of wood stacked on the edge of a garage, without having to worry about the bullet passing through and going through the wall of the garage. I wouldn't take that shot with a .22lr. The high speed light weight 17gr .17 bullet disintegrates upon impact and distributes all its energy. That's one of the reasons I like it for around structures.

Yes PCP cost as much as a firearm, but if you want ultimate quiet pest removal, it's hard to beat. It's been my experience that most firearms aren't optimized for subsonic ammo, (throat depth, case volume, barrel twist rate, bullet shape, etc). Even if they are, many powders don't burn clean at subsonic loads and result in a fouled up barrel (especially when using a suppressor) which then degrades accuracy. PCP rifles, set up right, are optimized to shoot subsonic accurately, and they can do it all day long and never foul.

Competition grade PCP's can shoot 1/2" groups at 50 yds. Good enough for headshots on squirrels. I usually don't shoot that far with mine. But mine will do 1/4" or 1/8" groups at 20 yds.
