New Coyote Rifle lookin at DPMS

So i had a couple other posts on this site and others looking for a bolt action rifle and decided why not just get a AR and get a left handed upper for it. Yes i am a lefty so finding a bolt action that fits my needs is difficult and i thought a AR15 would fit the bill because it is easily customized and they are a work horse and are built for the abuse it will serve as a truck and varmint gun.

So big question i was looking at the DPMS Sportical because it is pretty cheap at my local gun store and i was planning on using that for a while until i can get the $200 or so dollars to buy a left handed upper from DPMS. So is the Sportical good for a coyote/truck gun/varmint rifle????

Sportical any good?? Reveiws and pics appreciated.

I have been able to look closely at the Sportical a few times in the last year or so.

One thing I did not like about it is the lack of a shell deflector. I am also a lefty so I look for that particular feature. It also doesn't have a forward assist, but I don't think I have ever had to use one on my other AR's.

Lastly it has no sights, or in the DPMS language, optics ready. It is a flat top and the gas block is also flat.

I think there are plenty of other options for AR uppers out there, including saving up a little more money and getting the one you want the first time.

We give away an AR at our NRA banquet every year, the last 2 being the Sportical, and we have never had a problem selling the tickets for it (100 tickets @ 20 dollars ea) until the last two years with the Sportical.

I don't know what that means, but there it is.

I have a buddy who has 2 bushy sporticals that he got for cheap, now he just has 2 cheap guns in his house. Try to save a few more bucks and get a flat top with the deflector and forward assist. Try for a Rock River, (or dpms) you will be happy.

I have a Sportical. I love it! Its a very accurate rifle. It is not as expensive as some but the coyote's don't know the difference.

Exactly what do you mean here? Bushmaster doesn't make the sportical, DPMS does. I have 2.

Benson821, I have a DPMS LR308, 2 DPMS Sporticals in .223, a Bushmaster in .223, a Bushmaster in 6.8SPC, and a Remington R-15 in .204 Ruger. I like them all and am not disappointed with any of them. The Sporticals are a good rifle for a good price. Just my opinion.

Alright the plan I had in my mind was buy the sportical because they are fairly cheap at my local gun store (i.e. price ranging from $550 fo $650) and i would get the sportical and then buy the left handed DPMS or Stag reciever so i just had to change out the reciever to make it lefty. The stags seem too expensive and i would have to special order one from my local gun store. So is it a bad idea to get the sportical for around $600 and buy the stag left handed upper reciever for ~$182 on their site and would i have to get a bolt and charging handle with that reciever???

The comment on the 2 cheap sporticles was this buddy has alot of problems with jams in both guns and he said that he wished he had spent more money on a different gun that will not jam so often. I don't know where he got the bushy's if someone put them together or what but they look like a sportical, he paid $600 each.

Yes benson,,you would need a left eject bolt only for that set-up,,,might wanna do the cost vs cost of just getting a lower and a left handed stag complete upper.

I recently purchased an Oracle with a free floated aluminum handguard instead of the regular glacier guard. Topped it off with a Rock River mount (thank you JoeBob) holding a Sightron SII 3-9x42. I posted photos a few weeks ago when I got it.

I have exactly 85 trouble free rounds down the tube right now and am very pleased. I don't have the target posted up yet but last Saturday I printed a 1/2" group at 100 yards with Remington 69 grain matchking ammo. Only three shots, but it was way better than I expected.

It's my first AR and I'm happy with it. Sure, it's not a $2000 gun, but I don't expect it to be and don't need it to be either. Your mileage may vary.

The DPMS Sportical is a great little rifle. We have had one for a couple of years killing deer and coyote. I would have purchased the Oracle if it had been available at the time. Ours is accurate and reliable-no malfunctions or jams with both surplus and reloaded ammo. It is not a 'cheap' rifle. It is inexpensive compared to other ARs but it is an entry level AR. My youngest son, W, uses it with good effect.

Would you guys who own the sportical trust that rifle to shoot out to 300-400 yards?
Also what would you recomend as an optic?

Most of your factory 5.56 rifles will shoot accurately out to those ranges with the right ammo...

I have a DPNS 16" with a bull barrel that weighs just a few ounces more (the lighter contour is a better 'carry' model)

Most of my hunting ARs are equipped with either a 2.8-10x or 3-12x opiic, as most hunting situations require the lower power, but I can usually have time to crank it up if a longer range is present and is the only shot available and I feel comfortable taking it..

I have owned several DPMS rifles over the years and one word comes to mind...Accurate! I have never seen a DPMS that would'nt shoot good...The black cat is a good choice

Right now I've got no complaints.
