New electronic/digital powder scales?

I got the Lyman for Christmas and I am very satisfied with it. It works great and makes the entire process so much easier and faster than my old scale. I would highly endorse the Lyman.

I use the Lyman 1200 and like it. RCBS has a new model out that I saw a demostration of last fall. It appeared to be a nice unit but I didn't think it was that much better than the Lyman for me to change. The price wasn't to impressive at over $300.

Another vote for the Lyman 1200, I've been extremely pleased with mine. Midway USA has it on sale for around $220.00 right now.

How easy is it to use? Accuracy?

It is pretty simple but you will need to keep the instruction manual on hand till you get familiar with it. You have to calibrate it a couple of times to be accurate. You need to clean it up between powder changes. I use compressed air cans that make it pretty easy to clean. In actual use it is very simple and accurate. I have checked mine with a balance beam and another electronic scale and it is always dead on.

Someone just told me that the scale with the Lyman unit can be a real pain to get zero'ed in and can take an hour or more to get stable so you can use. Any truth to this?

"My Lyman works great and has a 30-minute pre-heat time before using. I have never had a problem with it."

The last time I waited 30 minutes for anything was when I was drafted into the army.

Not likely to happen again. Definitely not waiting for a scale to stabilize.

The 30 minute calibration is not required. You can skip it and go right to dispensing however it is suggested you allow it to warm up to be as accurate as possible. I have skipped the calibration step a few times and it was still dead on.

Still it's not as fast as a hand dispenser. I use 19gr of RL7 for my .256 loads by the time I seat the bullet and place into my "loaded" tray and grab another case it's trickling the last couple of tenths.

I like mine alot as well and don't mind the time it takes to dispense as I am not a volume shooter and gives me time to have a sip of coffee between shells.

I just started using the pact digital scale and the pact electronic powder dispensor. I like them both. Seem to be right on the money all of the time. No warm up time. Just have to calibrate it for the powder you are using.

I think the Lyman 30 minute warmup is just a "Protect your A$$" syndrome. They don't want some idiot just plugging it in and punching in a charge and shooting it. I always check my loads on two scales before proceeding. Even on balance beam scales you calibrate it by leveling. Could you image how stupid it would be to just throw your balance beam on the table and start weighing.

Pact improved their dispensing speed about 1.5 years ago and is now way faster (2-3 times faster) than it used to be and from what I've been told makes the Lyman look like a snail at a horse race. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Oh Forgot... Pact makes the Pact, RCBS and Dillon scales and dispensers. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
