New england 20 gauge to .45-70 govt.

Don't really know where else to ask this, so I guess this is as good as any. I've decided to keep my mossberg 500 with open sights, and pattern it with some good shot, but I'm also looking into getting a big bore heavy hitter for some hunting. This is the best resource I know of as I'm not a computer guy. I have a New England break down single shot twenty gauge and I remember there being different barrels available for them when I bought it, .410, 12 gauge. Does anyone know if there's a .45-70 barrel that will fit? I know New england makes a .45-70 govt single shot rifle, just wondering the best place to find info on if I can just convert my 20 gauge over. Thanks guys I'll post a pic in a min.

Can I put a rifle barrel on a shotgun frame?

Rifle barrels other than 357mag and 44 mag cannot be put a shotgun frame since the shotgun frame is not heat treated to handle the pressure. Since rifle frames are heat treated investment cast alloy, they are safe to use higher pressures, the lower pressure shotgun barrels don't present a hazard to the firearm and/or user as the inverse does. The larger firing pin and surrounding hole in the frame is also an issue.

hi i got this off of graybeard outdoors. i would call NEF to make sure.here is a link to a nef page on gbo

I believe this is correct.

You can convert the Handi-Rifle to a shotgun but you can't convert the shotguns to a rifle.

If you look at the model number on the frame....
If it starts with SB2- it can be converted to different rifle calibers.
If it is an SB1- you are stuck with only a shotgun... except 10ga.
10ga requires only a 10ga gun.

This is in the Barrel Accessory Program notes from the H&R website:
http://www.hr1871.com/Support/accessoryProgram.asp

"All model SB2 Handi-Rifles™ can be fitted with the rifle barrels listed below, as well as with shotgun barrels previously listed. Model SB1-Pardner® shotguns cannot be fitted with any rifle barrels."

The first part of the statement on the accessory barrel page is true about shotgun barrels on a rifle frame, but they've changed their policy on the 357mag and 44mag accessory barrels since they now offer those chamberings from the factory on SB1 frames, they'll now fit those two barrel to SB1 shotgun frames made since 1987, no 45-70 or any other rifle barrels yet though. There's a list of build years by serial number prefix at the GBO link.
