I agree, I would call and ask if a .17 Remington or .17 Fireball are legal. I willing to bet that whoever put that in the book doesn't realize that the 17's are actually .172

I would also concur....
To me its clear they intended to include the 17's as they said centerfire 177 to 25cal. If they didn't want to include the 17's they would have said 20 to 25cal. I would also bet you wouldn't be the first person to call and ask about it either.

Fox wise, I definitely prefer my shotgun...getting them in reasonably close isn't particularly difficult usually, only in highly pressured hunting areas or where repeated calling is done. Coyotes on the other hand, in my experience, are very difficult to get within 50 yards here. With the low coyote kill numbers (via gun) here in NJ, I believe they've expanded the regulations to include rifles to allow for those longer distances specifically for them. No doubt if I had even 100-125 yard gun I could have shot a good number of the ones I called in.

I definitely have my interests in that .17Rem given it's general effective range and power for both species. I think given I'll almost always be shooting under 200 yards (probably even 150), it's a good option with the right bullet and load based on what I've been reading. I might even be able to find a reloader around here that can make me some loads.

Yes, that is definitely excellent news and opens up the options. I'll keep reading around and see what others have experienced with the various smaller calibers and see if I can narrow down on a selection. If anyone else has any recommendations on a caliber and load for the conditions I described (sub 200 yards), please let me know! Thanks for all the help guys!
 
You may NOT shoot woodchuck with "any caliber" in NJ- same .25 cal limit as fox/coyote

FMJ is prohibited for hunting- I think the regs you posted say soft nosed or hollow point.

Everything is dangerous in a populated area. Shoot safe, Know your target and beyond and it'll be fine. The State has factored safety into their provisions to allow CF rifle, Why limit yourself further?.

Nothing is foolproof however, be conscientious.

The CZ model 527 "American" is a great Rifle,light weight so it's a easy carrying Rifle!The Tikka is a good Rifle,the Kimber and Ruger are another 2 well made Rifles!The Savages are good Rifles and I'm thinking the Remington VTR is a very nice Predator Rifle!
