New Groundhog Hunting Toy

Coleridge,

I haven't tried the Super X in the Ruger yet, but they weren't very impressive in my Marlin.

I wish ammo was a bit more consistant with good groups, but I just can't seem to find anything that beats the Remington 33 grainers in both my Ruger and Marlin.

Go ahead & give them a try... You might be surprised. You won't be out anything if you already have them. In some guns they just WORK

Coleridge,

Man, I never expected this kind of accuracy from the Super X 40 grainers. They didn't shoot worth a hoot in my Marlin. The Ruger apparently has different thoughts. Here are two, 3-shot groups I shot this evening. A nickel will cover both groups.

Now the question is, how do they perform on game? They have a lot of lead exposed on the tip, so I'm wondering if they expand too quickly?

I would like to hear from anyone who has used these bullets on game of any kind and how they performed.

Thanks.

David

Hi David
The SuperX Wins in HP has been all I shoot, has outstanding penatration and good mushrooming some passing through on Ground Hogs/Coon. Does not Blow up like the Rem.33s. However at 100yds. I get a better group and are flater shooting than the SuperX Jeff

Told YA! They shoot the best in almost all "mags" I've been around.

Seriously, "the grey box winchester's" are one of the BEST all around bullet for 22mag. Nothing fancy but they just plain WORK. You won't be disapointed on preformance (as long as you don't think it's an elk rifle). The best part is they are reletivly cheap too.

Thanks guys,

Just now placed an order for 250 rounds. No one locally has them.

Soon I'll be in the groundhog fields and hope to put 'em to the test.

6mm, I think its the best all around for the 22 magnum its like a nosler partition Ive killed lots of coyotes with that one!Great weight retention and penetration at all ranges for 22 magnum.

Comparisons:

Here are two groups I fired this evening. Both groups shoot very well at 60 yards. As an added bonus, both will allow for groundhog shooting at that distance without having to resight.

The top group is the Remington 33 gr. Accutip V, sighted 1" high. It hits near center at 94 yards (my 100 yard range).

The bottom group hits near point of aim at 60 yards, and is only a little over an inch low (average) at 94 yards.

Surprisingly, both groups shot the same measurement at 94 yards.

6mmo6, cant wait to hear about some ground hog hunting. Had my 22 magnum out the last couple of weeks and killing some crows longest shot was 80 steps, going again in the morning. And thats pretty good shooting on your new VMBZ!

Hey Marco,

Nice going on the crows. 80 yards is a "fur" piece in my book for crows with a 22 magnum. A crow's body when all the feathers are stripped away is not much of a target. At 60 yards I'm very comfortable with it, but it's somewhat lacking at 100 yards, at least by what I am used to. Confidence has a lot to do with it, plus knowing what a rifle / load will do.

I'll be sure to keep you posted about the groundhog situation. I hope within two or three weeks to be out in the fields.

6mm06, keep shooting that VMBZ and let it get broke-in and I'll bet you'll be killing crows at 80yds. and out past 125! Ive killed more crows with my VMBZ than any other rifle I own and alot of them were at long for rimfire ranges. With the 34gr. Supremes when Im dead on at 100yds. its -1.8 at 125yds. and at 150yds. its only -4.9" low and at 175yds. its -9.3. Energy at 125 is 128ft.lbs. at 150 its 107 ft.lbs. and at 175 its 92! Plenty of power and accurate at those ranges. And the Rem 33gr.V-maxs shoot flat too!!I have the ballistics from 100yds. out to 200yds. for the Rem V-maxs if you need them.

I did a bit of resighting this evening. I'm still amazed. This is the most accurate .22 magnum rifle I have ever owned, thanks to Marco and some others who informed me about the rifle's potential, and to Coleridge and others who put me onto the Winchester 40 gr. HP.

The target was shot at varying distances to determine bullet impact. I fired two shots at 60 yards (top two), then moved the target to my 100 yd range, which is actually 94 yds, fired two shots (bottom two), then moved it to a closer range of 38 yds and fired one shot, which hit slightly lower and to the right of the 60 yd group.

The extreme measurement, considering bullet rise and fall, is 1.60"

Groundhogs beware.

Below are the results.

Ive shot and tested 22 magnums for years and you will not find a better 22 magnum rifle than that Ruger VMBZ! Best 5 shot group with my Ruger VMBZ with Win Supreme 34gr. ammo was .960 at 100yds. It would shoot 3 shot groups more times than not that you could cover with a dime at 100yds. And yours looks like its going to be one of those accurate rifles!

Good job!! Those VMBZ are something are they not? I like they way you have your new rifle setup good luck with it!

Thanks Marco,

I really like a dot reticle scope, and that Leupold is just what I needed to make a nice rifle even nicer. The parallax is now set to 60 yards as I mentioned previously. The Warne rings add to the appearance too. Altogether the rig is really sweet.

You are indeed right that the VMBZs are really something. They feel and operate like a fine rifle, unlike so many other 22 rimfires. The gun / scope / ring combination is rather heavy, but I like that.

At the shot, that coyote went down so fast that I could barely see it in the grass, and wouldn't have except for a small twitch.

How do the Winchester Super Xs perform on lung shot coyotes, or do you shoot for the head?

They do good, mushroom out like a big game bullet I call them the Nosler Partition of rimfire rounds. If all I hunted was coyotes with my VMBZ the Super X 40gr. HP is all Id use I like them that much!

David there sticking you with price on those Remington I get them at the Gun shop in Rocky Mount 14.00 a box just bought some a few weeks ago
