New Gun 260rem or 270wsm.

260 Rem in Rem Mod 7 ss synthetic is the rifle I bought for my wife. She likes it, but not as much as the rest of the family.. We have all taken deer with it and it is very accurate.
120 gr Sierra Spitzer and 85 gr Sierra HP
deer and varmint loads shoot close enough not to change POI with the Redfield 3x9

I don't think you can get the .270 WSM in a model 7 or a mountain rifle.

Why not the standby .270 win?

If you've never shot a .260 it'll impress you. kind of a cross between the 243 and the 7mm08. it's a good gun, within it's limits. friend of mine bought his boy, about 13-or so at the time a .260, he's killed a bunch of deer with it, groundhogs too. it's a m-7, wood stock. with his 3X9 scope its a 125 yard chuck gun, 100% kill at 100. the short barrel hurts his long range shooting, and for our 100 to 125 pound deer, factory ammo is built for "big-game". the bullets, just don't open-up like they should. i don't think he's ever lost one hit, but i remember a couple that just ran like they weren't hit at all. he's loading 100grs bullets or so now?
Hammer, not sure about the WSM, i have my ffl and will check.

Redsnow, tell your friend to try a 120 grain Nosler Ballistic tip in the .260. Excellent expansion and plenty of penetration to make it an effective deer bullet.

Welcome to the board Steve.

There is a big difference between a 260 and a 270 WSM. WSM big boomer and has some recoil. Don't know if you can get it in a small rifle anymore. Can't in a Rem for sure. 260 nice round mild recoil. The only problem with the 260 is you need to be a reloader to get full advantage of the round.

WeLL Im a .270 fanatic so I will have to say .270 wsm. Ive got one in a Tikka T3 and its a fantastic cartridge.

The .270 wsm works on a short action, hits harder, and has more velocity then a .260 and still manages to have very managable recoil.

For whitetail deer I don't think any cartridge compares to the .270/.270 wsm /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Cheers!!

HI I'M Old School And I Hunt Big Deer. In Thick Country. And I'm Trying to find out all i can about the 260. The 270wsm makes 150gr. roundnose. and i think 140gr. the bigges for the 260. thanks steve.

thornmthounds,
If you are thinking round nose bullets deflect less in brush, that is a myth. There was extensive testing done and written up in the "American Rifleman" about 25 years ago that showed conclusively that slow round nose bullets deflect the most. Faster, pointed bullets deflected the least. This of course is the exact opposite of what the "general consensus" was at the time.

Steve, go for the .260 and we'll whip up a handload that will drive tacks and kill even the biggest bucks in Pittsburg NH.
