New gun to the stable......old school savage 170 pump 30-30

Well my brother owed me some money and part of the payment came as a savage 170 30-30 pump. It's in pretty good shape as well. I know these were a cheaper 30-30 made from 70-81 but that about all I know. Going to put a low power scope and keep the ol see thru mounts lol. What ammo should I start with from all you 30-30 gurus
 
That isn't a bad rifle at all. I never owned one but a boyhood friend had one and killed deer about every year with no trouble. Ditch the see throughs, put a decent scope on it, try a few types of ammo to see what it likes and sharpen your knife because you'll have a deer down lickety split.
 
Wow, neat rifle...never really been a Savage fan, I had to look up images to see what one looked like. I never even knew they made such a thing. I like it.
 
I'm a savage fan I just bought the new 555 o/u 12 a couple weeks ago. I found a limited edition at dicks that was way prettier than the normal ones. This makes savage #6 in my stable
 
They came in 35Rem. also, I'd jump on one of those. Like others have said dump the seethrouhs and mount a 1x4x20mm Leupold VX-1 or 2 in low rings and you'll be amazed at how fast it handles. Keep it on 1x and just crank it up for a long shot or at the range. I use the same scopes on my drillings and combos and on 1x I can even use them on birds, 4x will take them out to 300 yards.
 
Thanks the stock needs refinished there is some wear on the butt area but all in all she is pretty clean and bluing looks pretty dang good. Going to start working on her when I finish my new savage 10 ml 2 I came into a couple weeks ago. And of course when I get my 264 back together that my stocked got stewed up on...still pissed off on that one
