If you hit a tensioned fence wire you get to restring. Chain link - not to worry. I hit the wire support of a political yard sign, 308W from 20 ft - once. Cur the wire in half. 12 ga should not be a problem with smaller buckshot.
Uh…Bama has trapping. Not sure who told you that it’s not allowed, but they lied. They have about the same rules as we do. Coyotes are legal year round.
As far as dogs and footholds, I release them all the time. A foothold is basically handcuffs for animals. Trust me when I tell you they don’t break bones or even fingers otherwise I’d stay in a cast!!
There comes a time you just say the heck with not getting caught cause it’s gonna happen, lol.
Now when you catch yourself after it’s anchored and jump and reach the end of that chain, that will make you say some words you’re not supposed to say!! Especially when it’s just one finger caught.
The day you reach over the bank to pull up a drowned beaver and it turns out to be a leaf over the pan and you stick your hand in a #4 coil spring, the bottlom to soft to press the levers down and you have to wade armpit deep in ice cold water to pull the deep stake with the #4 still clamped to your hand and then drag the whole works to dry land so you can release yourself you've finally graduated into real trapper status. I know a guy that did the same thing with a 330 conibear and did all that with a broken arm and then drive to the hospital and and have it cut off and his arm set, you get Real Trapper in capital letter's after your name
I would agree that shotgun is a great choice if you are shooting 35 yards. If you are quick with a follow up shot you could get both. If it were me, I would put some traps out as well.
I don’t do a lot of water trapping. I do have some Belisle 280’s and seen what they do to beaver/otters. Hoping I never have to release myself from one of those!! Not as big as a 330, but I believe it’s big enough to do some damage.
Had 330 Belisle hold beaver by a front foot(several times), I'm very careful with my Belisle 330's and 220's. Recently picked up a Bridger 330, it has a similar jaw corner design and strong springs. Thumb was caught in a Victor conibear.
