New houndsman looking for help

I just got a Plott hound pup, and am looking for advice and help on getting into the sport. This dog comes from good lines (from what I am told) and one parent is a bear dog, and the other a lion dog. He is approx. 4 months old, and real smart. All I know to do to get started is to buy the book "Walk with wick" and read and heed. I also im in search of good inexpensive equipment to get me started. For the time being I am only looking to run one dog (mainly for cats). What equipment should I start with? From what I know I will be needing an E-collar (trashbreaker/bark limiter), tracking collar/reciever, dog box, etc. Anything else?

He has a good home, but right now (due to below zero temps) he is an inside dog. As soon as the weather breaks he will be an outside dog. I am good with animals, but dont know much about training dogs. The onlything on my side right now is that I am determined, willing, and able to tackle such a project.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks.....Here is some pics of this beautifull pup

Best advice I can give is to find some guys that will let you tag along with them. It's a good way to learn the whole deal and not make costly mistakes.
It's also good to get the dog started with another good slow dog. He's kinda young, so all you can do now is encourage him with scents, (a tail etc.) and get ready for next year.
Good luck.

Gunner IMO a good handeling dog is a must start now with the here command and walking on a lead. I was told by a friend, whom talked to a fella that trains and hunts cat dogs out west, that he gets a hide and taunts his pups with it then he ties it in a tree on a bungie cord so they have to jump to get it and they will "play" for hours with it and it makes em want to get it worse than anything. I did this with my coyote hound pup and he is coyote crazy at 5 months old. The tracking and treeing ability is in his genes run him with the big dogs on a smokin hot track and it will eventualy come to him. Never run him on a so so track with trashy dogs it will be 1 step foreword and 2 steps back. Goood luck with your new partner.

Look here in the clasifides for tracking and shoking equipment

Look here for dayglow tree tie leads and collars buy the collars long and cut than add a hole if needed (for when pup is full grown)

That is a hansome pup. The 2 previous posts are both good advice. I dont know the first thing about cats, but I definately would try to find some good hounds to run with.
Good Luck

Thanks for the replies so far, as I said any and all input would be appreciated.
What about equipment? Any ideas on brands to stay away from, or the good inexpensive ones?

I like the stuff from Wildlife Materials. Never had a problem and it works good. Lots of good equipment out there. Look on EBAY. There's a bunch.

IMO stay away from inoteck I personaly like the Marshal track collars because you can change the battries yourself with an allen wrench and 2 AA bats from the gas station. If the red light is blinking it has 72 hrs before it is dead. also they are very lightweight. Tritronics new G2 line of shockers is nice if you get the Trashbraker or Clasic 70 EXP you can start with 1 collar and expand up to 6. They are also light. If you are buying the e-collar you dont need all the fancy bells all you need is a clasic 70 G2 EXP IMO. It has the tone feature and 6 levels of constant stimulation. Monatery stimulation to me is a waste of money. you will likely use 2 and 6 for traning 2 to get his attention and 6 to make him remember.

Congrats on your new dog!!

From my experience with other types of dogs ..... a pup learns SO much from an older wiser one.

And the dog you run him with .... good or bad ...... so goes the pup!

Enjoy and best of luck!

Bust dem cats!
