New Hunter - Ohio Coyote Hunting Set-Up

Hey guys, I live in Ohio and I’m new to coyote hunting. I have the gear, an electronic call, and coyote(s) on my property. Before going out and screwing something up I wanted to get some wisdom from this group.

The area that I’m hunting has a predominately SW wind (blue arrow in pic) and I’ve seen tracks along the south edge of the creek and west edge of the woods (red lines) and I saw a coyote while I was deer hunting a few weeks ago at about 9:30am where the red circle is.

Presuming there is a SW wind, what do you think would be the best set-up? Where to place the call, where to sit at, calls to use etc?

I’ll tell you what I was planning on doing and you can tell me how stupid I am

I was planning on setting up about a half hour before sunrise, coming in from the East field, putting the call in the field between the woods and creek and sitting near the NE edge of the woods, 75 yards are so from the call, and using squirrel/raccoon distress and canine pups calls.

I have no idea what I’m doing, so any help is appreciated!

Welcome aboard sir. Good folks here to chime in and give you a lot of advice I'm sure. Sounds like you're off to a good start to me cizzle. I'd recommend you read in the baiting thread for a lot of advice and experience as well.

I've only been at it for 2 years but I can say night vision was/is a game changer for me. Calling doesnt work too good compared to baiting but thats just me around my place. 21 down since I started.

Just gotta get out there and put the time and work in. You will find what works and what doesnt and if you have many in the area you will be in the meat so to speak.

Does the wind blow in the same direction from 30 minutes before sunrise till dark in the evening?

The areas I hunt coyotes in the wind changes about 180 degrees around 8 am and 4 pm this time of the year.

Thanks for the response! I got the ATN Pro 5-20 scope last spring (mainly so I could record my groundhog murdering) so I have the capability of hunting at night, I just thought that since I saw a coyote in the morning I would try hunting sunrise first, but I can do whatever.

Have you found that there is a best time to hunt?

A 90 degree angle wind change in the wrong direction would stop me from calling on a small property.

If you want to be successful on your property calling coyotes don't make any stands on it unless the conditions are perfect.

Thanks for the response! That’s why I want to try and make sure I’m setting up as best I can the first time, so I don’t inadvertently end the hunt before it starts.
