New Hunting Rig

For those of you that have or built hunting rigs for your trucks to hunt at night with, is 3 chairs too many? I am in the process of building another rig and decided to go with 3 chairs on this one. The first one I built has 2 chairs and works great. The new one will have one chair over the fender well on the driver side and then one chair in the front corner of the bed on the passenger side and the third chair in the back corner on the passenger side ( a triangle shape/design). The chairs will be approx. 5 ft above the top of the bed and capable of swiveling 360 degrees. The chairs will also be removeable and the pedastal will swivel down to lay flat with the top of the truck bed. My concern is this.......is this too many chairs to have and is 5 ft above the top of the bed enough to keep from shining the truck with the light? I have seen several pics of different rigs on here and even seen one like Randy Watsons up close but most of the ones I have seen are either single or at most double chairs. Either way I was just wondering what everyones opinion was. Once I am finished I hope to get some pics of both rigs to put up here.
 
Capt, I`m fond of the 1 chair high with 2 chairs below. Your setup sounds pretty interesting though! One question who is doing the shooting?? If all three have a gun I think I would pass, even with the most careful marksmen thats still a dangerous situation. Are all 3 going to have spotlights? Kind of like the old saying 2 is company and 3`s a crowd.
 
All three chairs will be the same height and all three will have lights mounted to them. My thought was the one chair would have shots from 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock, then next chair would have from 2 o'clock to 6 o'clock and them the last from 6 o'clock to 10 o'clock. I know that in alot of these areas we hunt not all three people will have the opportunity to shot due to the terrain and brush. Which ever guy is out would be in charge of the e-caller and be looking for game with his binos. I agree this could be a dangerous set up but I just come up with the idea of putting stops on the swivel part of the chair so a shooter couldn't swivel around all the way and shoot the guy next to him. I appreciate the input as this is the kind of feedback I am looking for. Thanks Neffquail.
 
I guess I'm confused here. Why would you want 3 or even 2 chairs?? I have one and have for 10 years, it works fine and I don't think I miss anything by not having 2 or 3 people up there shining. Maybe you guys have areas where you have critters coming in all directions, but I don't usually have that problem. Wow, I can see a lot of chances to blow a set, somebody shines another guy, more movement, more lights to go out or drain the battery..somebody could get shot,,,...I may be old fashioned..I'll stay with one chair, I do ok with it. OK I guess I should add to this a little. We will be using this rig while hunting some of the varmint hunts around here. One of the rules is you can only use one vehicle per team to hunt out of. We have three people on our team. As for shining the light on someone, I can put stops on the chairs so they don't swivel all the way around and each chair would have their own light and battery. If I hunted alone all the time then a rig like Randy's would be perfect. Hopefully once I get it finished and a picture of it up it might make a little more sense - I know my explanations are the easiest to understand. Thanks again for the input.
 
Do you guys with high seats in the back of your trucks ride in the chair all of the time, or do you drive to a stand and then mount up? We stand in a padded frame in the the back of the truck, and that can be rough enough at times :eek: without being several feet up in the air.

If we are riding in the high seats its on one place creeping along, we never ride in them going from one pasture to another. Randy you bring up a good question, but with some welding, cutting, rewelding and alot of head scratching I believe I can come up with something that will work for all applications described. It sure is easy to take a simple idea and complex it in a matter of minutes. Thanks again for the help!
 
Captkb, I would think Randy's "one man operation" would be the way to go. I understand the delima you have with 3 guys, and all want to be shooters. But this way you could change out and let each have a turn. Safety seems to be an issue that route and may cause for some busted ear drums.

Just my .02. I make enough noise as it is much less three of me. A guy told me once two is plenty for varmint hunting. And Ive had to make some people mad but hey my success sure increased.
 
I have been in Randy's chair while moving from stand to stand, not a bad ride at all, like he said, very stable. Also a great place to see the rattlesnakes from in front of the truck. When he hits the highway though, you better be in the truck cab, because this man, doesn't waste your hunting time driving from one area to another. When he leaves the dirt and hits the blacktop, well let's just say "you will be moving", How you and that Boss Hoss doing Randy?

What a ride!! Blue4everdog go to the main page click on night hunting in the column on the left side of the page and read it at least twice!!!! Good hunting. As for the three chair idea I think I will stick with one I don't get to shoot very often when calling but I like the part of giving whoever is up there something to shoot at!
 
If you don't mind I will give you a little advice. You will probably find that just having one chair on your hunting rig will increase your numbers of coyotes that make it in the back of your pickup. We rotate out of the chair on a regular basis. The double and triple chair idea just plain scare me to death, I want to concentrate on looking for eyes instead of having to constantly be wandering what the other guys are doing. Remember there is no room for mistakes.
