Gun owners in Illinois will be required to report missing firearms under a new law signed by Gov. Pat Quinn.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Quinn said the law will make it easier to recover stolen weapons and help ensure that only responsible people buy firearms. The legislation includes a mandatory background check by gun owners of potential buyers of firearms.

The measure passed both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly.

"It's going to help our law enforcement," said Quinn, a Democrat. "It's going to help all of us be safe."

Quinn signed the legislation last Sunday at a South Side Park near when an off-duty Chicago police officer was killed with an illegal firearm in 2010, the paper reported.

Beginning immediately, gun owners whose weapons are lost or stolen will have 72 hours to notify police. And, according to the Tribune, beginning Jan. 1 individual gun owners will have to contact the state police before selling a firearm or prior to a transfer of ownership to ensure that the buyer is permitted to own a gun.

I have no problem with the "requirement to report lost or stolen" weapons...It will cut down on the cases where when one is recovered that has been used in a crime and the registered (4470) owner then claims that it's been missing for an unknown/undocumented time....

I used to hate finding a firearm on a suspected thief and upon checking the serial number, getting a response that there were no wants on it, when in my heart, I knew it wasn't legally in the subjects possession...

The requirement to call the State Police before transfer is a little over reach, but then, IL does require that the recipient has a Firearm Owner Identification card...and that's even to buy ammunition...

Reporting a stolen fire arm could be helpful, however,,,, those snakes in Illinois will take the next step and that is to make the gun owner an accessory after the fact for LETTING the gun be stolen. I don't trust them in that regard.

From what I understand that is the goal. If you do not report the gun stolen within 72 hours you are held accountable for any wrong doing with the gun. This whole thing is just a way for ol Fat Quinn to try and stab back at loosing the concealed carry law. Illinois has no chance until we seceed(sp) from Chicago or Cook county for that matter.
My state cracks me up. The politics are just plain crooked. They shut down 50 schools in Chicago but then give almost the whole ISP brand new vehicles. I know some people thought they should have shut down those schools but here is how I look at it. With schools shutting down that is forcing the kids to go to a new school. In Chicago this could be a dangerouse thing for students. With rival gangs attending these schools alot of students will probably drop out. Then you will have more drop out teenagers gangbanging and selling drugs on the corner. Which in turn causes them to shoot eachother over turf for there drugs. It is a viciouse cycle.
You want to stop the violence in Chicago. Educate your kids better. Give them a future to look towards. Dont shut them out so they can just quit going to school all together. How many new gangbanging drug dealers did that just cause. How many more students will die this year because there school got shut down which caused them to go to the wrong neighborhood.
My state is broke but yet we buy the ISP all new vehicles. I am not saying are police dont need equiped. I am just saying You have to start somewhere. If we would work on getting are kids educated so they have a future to look towards instead of making fast cash on the corner. Give them away out not a new cop car to be put in the back of.
Dont take this the wrong way. I just think Chicagos politics got this wrong. They want to blame the problems on guns when they create problems by shutting down schools. Which in turn makes more gangbanging drug deallers who shoot eachother. When there 12 year old asses should be in school. Some of these kids have no way to school now. There parents might be crackheads who dont care if they go to school. That kid however was looking for away out. Then you shut down his school and he cant get across Chicago to go to his new school so he just follows suit.

Sorry for my rant but does anybody else see problems with this. They call marijuina the gateway drug. Well shutting down schools is the gateway to a life of a criminal. I get the police might need new equipment. I just dont see how you justify shutting down 50 schools then turning around and spending that much money on new vehicles for the cops. I mean wasnt the ISP suppose to have a bunch of layoffs last year because of the budget. Maybe I am missing something. Like I said sorry for the rant but they want to blame guns when it is a much bigger problem. Guns dont kill all these kids. Uneducated 14 year olds doing the only thing they know how are the ones killing eachother. ALl because of these crooked [beeep] politicains. Ok ok ok I am done but please someone tell me that I am not insane for thinking like this

Sorry if I hijacked the thread. Didnt mean to but I feel as though most of Illinois gun problems come from Chicago. Same with most are politic problems come from Chicago. They want to pass all these new gun laws base off what goes on in that city. The city they make that way. Chicago has had a murder problem for a while now and they just keep making new gun laws that they dont enforce and the criminals dont abide by. The only ones who suffer are the law abiding citizens. Maybe its time we try something else. Maybe loosen the gun laws and work on are education system. This state is a great example of what is wrong with this country. I do believe we need to do an overhaul of are politicians. We also need to work on the gang and drug problem. I know they tried that before in California and they said it was racial profiling. If the shoe fits where it. Its time we crack down on the real problems. Not make believe ones

cmil84,,,No argument with most of your comments...Most of our social problems in the whole country can be placed in the fractionalized family structures, the removal of solid religion practices/concepts from the school system, and lack of educational accountability in schools at the local level...

Get the courts out of the business of 'creating' law and approving frivolous law suits and we might be able to bring this country back to where it should be...
