New Mexico Coyote Hunting

Hello All,

I'm going to be in South Central New Mexico most of my deer season this year working. I was looking to see if anyone here knows of places to coyote hunt. I'll be down near Socorro, NM.

I'm there now, head back to AL shortly but will be back around the first of November for awhile.

Thanks,
Dan

Dan, much of the land around Socorro is BLM and is open to the public. Take a cruise down to the local BLM office (they should have one there) and get some maps of the local area. They'll show you all the land ownership in the area and get you pointed in the right direction. As a non-resident, you'll need a license of some type to hunt coyotes. A small game license will work, but if you already have a big game license of some kind, you're covered. Don't forget that stupid Habitat Improvement Stamp. It's only five bucks but it'll cost you $150 if you get caught without it. I'm just down the road from you in Las Cruces and we do real well with coyotes. In fact, I was thinking of making this year's maiden voyage this weekend or next. Shoot me and email (in my profile) if you want to chat more about the area. Give me a day or so, I'm slow on email...

Good luck!

I have hunted all over Socorro County. Like DR said, there is a of BLM and State land. The calling is excellent!! You can also get a New Mexico Gazetteer plat book. Most truck stops have them....

Good Hunting,

Bob

The cattlemen had the ADC guys shoot every coyote they could find around Socorro and most of that part of the Rio Grand just last week, they did it from the air too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Derek, I don't like the idea of shooting them from the air at all. That happens to cost the public money and we have a million predator hunters that would do it for free. I believe it does hurt the coyote population, I've personally seen it.

Hey Derek,

Don't give up on those ranchers just yet. They may be blowing you off because of the elk and deer season. One rancher we asked told us no because he did not want us disturbing deer and elk that his wealthy customers were after. But he told us to come on after the season and have at them.
Use the state trust lands up there /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif .
