New Mexico Oryx

My son drew a Badge hunt tag for oryx this year and went on his hunt on January 3, 2015. I was able to scout a week before the hunt and located about 30 animals in the hunt area which was North of highway 70 for those of you familiar with the area. The hunt got off to a slow start with San Agustin pass being closed because of ice and snow on the road. The roads were opened at 9:00am which put us on range about 10:30am

It was not until 2:00pm that we saw the first oryx which was a broken horn that Cody did not want to pursue. Then at about 4:45 we found a group of 18 oryx that we had spotted on our scouting trip. After stalking the herd for about 20mins Cody was within a 100 yards of the herd. After deciding which one he wanted and a well placed shot from the 270 Weatherby magnum and 150 grain Barnes bullet a nice bull went down. It measured 31 3/8 inches on the left and 31 1/2 inches on the right. Nice way to end the day of hunting with only about 20 minutes of hunting time left.

It is always a pleasure and joy to spend time hunting with your good hunting buddy. This hunting buddy is also my son.

Gotta love those oryx.

Beautiful animal and excellent table fare. Congratulations!

Was your animal completely broadside, or quartering? Did the bullet pass through? Reason I ask is that I had almost identical bullet placement on a bull last year quartering away w/338 Win Mag & 210 gr. NP and he ran probably a mile before we finally caught up with him and put him down with a 2nd shoulder shot from the opposite side. Neither bullet passed through as it turned out.

This picture shows entrance of first shot:

Again, congratulations on a great hunt; you are in for some fine eating!

It was quartering slightly away at about 100 yds and went through. The side in the picture is the entrance side and was low and slightly back on the shoulder and the bullet exited middle of the shoulder on the offside. The blood up high was not the entrance wound. It was nice to see him go down with one shot after only running about 60 yards. They are TOUGH animals. You also see that when you gut them. Cody is very composed when making shots on game.

Now I see the blood behind the shoulder....tuft of grass nearly hid it. Very good shot placement. I was not too pleased w/my high shot but that is where I held it due to range estimation error on my part. Anyway, I was surprised that the 210 gr. bullet did not exit...suspect it lodged in off shoulder but the butcher never found it???

They are indeed tough animals.

They say the shoulder is the best place for the shot. That is hard to do after years of North American Game behind the shoulder. The vitals are really forward and low in the chest cavity. Cody's shot did not hit the heart. I thought it took the heart out.

Yep, try as I might, the crosshairs just naturally settle behind the shoulder even though I'd been cautioned to center shoulder and hold 1/3 way up.

Get in on the draw now. Seems like our xenophobic game and fish is trying to kill them all.
