New "BEAR" call

One of our members contacted me and asked about a hand call which would reproduce realistic bear cub distress crys. He had a tape of real bear cub in distress, which he recorded onto his computer and sent to me via E mail. I made an open reed call and tuned it to sound as much like the recording that I could. I modified a killer call, added larger diameter bell up front to get that hollow sound that is in real bear cub's voice. The result was a call that sounds so much like a crying bear cub that it nearly brought tears to my eyes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif No self respecting momma bear could resist that sound, especially in early fall's bear season. The call will be used in Washington state. I gotta tell ya that this man is much braver than I. I engraved the word "BEAR" on this call before I shipped it. I am betting that we hear about some very exciting bear calling experience from Washington state this fall.

hey rich, since i dont have a job and my wallet has cobwebs, ill definetly buy one, once i get the money. without a doubt, because my bear call from knight and hale is a peice o' crap. it locks up all the time. if its ok, do you think you can record that sound t the cpu, and send it to me? my email is meccaman520@msn.com
 
is that really what a bear cub sounds like? it sounds pretty sad. i have a question, i know when you call bears, once you stop calling, they stop coming. is this the case with a bear cub distress?

If you are using cub call by itself and stop calling a sow if looking for a cub will circle down wind to use her nose to find the cub. A boar will probably do the same thing. It increases the odds of getting you busted without a clear shot. Calling bear is exciting enough without a Mother bear forgetting her natural fear and willingness to protect her cub at any cost. We all assume that the black bear will be frightened away once they figure out that we are human. Once you add the maternal instinct into the equation all bets are off. We are starting to get into the Disney version of bear hunting where black bears do not attack human unless provoked. In my book sounding like a distressed cub is provoking a bear attack. Just think of the headlines on why a hunter was maimed or killed using a bear cub distress call. I will get off my soapbox and all I ask is to think before using the call.

Yep, that's why that I know that some people are braver than me. I warn folks about the very danger you mention. Guys who blow bear distress crys on a mouth call have to be the Evil Knevil's of the calling world. Keep your powder dry and finger close to the trigger.

The bear cub in video that was sent to me sure sounds like that. The guy who shot the video heard the wav I sent you and says something like "Holy!#&^%XX!!!!! I will take it!" /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I think I'm going to have to give this one a try. I've been calling bears and other stuff for quite awhile, with Airedales for backup. Haven't been eaten yet. How about sending that wav my way? rcmc@sisqtel.net
 
to be totally honest im not too scared calling a bear with a cub distress. i am a bit, but not much, ive been in hairier situations. ive been about 5 feet away from a momma with 2 cubs last summer fly fishing at the dyberry, i was putting on my waders and i see a head pop out of the tall grass, and she came walking out and the cubs followed, playing around with each other. she just walked right past me like i wasnt even there. so i got in my car and drove down the road about 1/2 mile, to get away from that bear, and once she goes in that stream, there wont be any trout there. anyway, where im gonna call ill be in a high up treestand on private property, ill probably have my brother with me so he can watch fr bears as well. i think ill be safe in there, its like a little treehouse. a question, how does the bear come in, i know can guess its gonna be running nonstop, but will it be growling and clacking its teeth? if i wasnt hunting in a treestand, id forget the whole idea, i dont know how wayne carlton does it, id soil my shorts /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif another question, would it be a good idea to use a heavier gun than a .35? i do have an 06, a 7mm, and a .338, but ihate the recoil, im a small guy.

A sow will send the cub up a tree at the first sign of danger and the cubs learn that behavior very quickly. By calling from a tree stand you will be exactly where the sow expects the cub to be. Don't forget bears can climb!

If you are in a densly bear populated area you may have a sow rush in and then a big boar come in.The sow may find your tree the safest one to climb.

I had a co-worker have a bear climb up into his treestand, basicly trash the stand and , taking a big bite out of his chair. Lucky for him he was not in the stand at the time. He switched from a bow to a rifle the next day.

I agree that something like a bazooka would be nice when using the cub distress sound. There are several problems with using a cub distress call. First is that the momma bear comes running in to protect the cub where a boar comes in to kill it. Either way it makes for an exciting time. Another problem is here it is illegal to shoot a mom with cubs so you have to be able to identify the bear's sex really quickly and hope that you don't have to switch from the hunter mode to the self defense mode. But the biggest problem here is that you will get a bear alright but it could easily be a grizzly.

This can really put excitement in to it. Gives a whole new meaning to the term "Holy S$$^&t!". I know because this has happened to me a few times. A couple of years back while chasing moose I was in some heavy timber when I heard a cub in distress. Well I happened to have one of Ed's calls that I can make sound like a cub in distress so I gave it a couple of toots. Well there was this big roar, trees and bushes started flying and an out of control freight train was heading in my direction just a roaring and a thrashing. Yep it was one pissed off grizz. I said to my self "John, this is not good!" (Only hd my 06 but was wishing for a bazooka!) I decided stealth mode was where I was going and I was able to slip out the back door as the grizz hadn't located me yet. Prior encounters using the cub distress call have been exciting but that little experience caused me to rethink the how and when of using it. Definitely a new stratagy have been implemented that tones the excitement level a bit.

But with all that said put me down for one. I have a nusiance griz to get rid of up at my camp.
 
thats wierd how bears get that pissed off, i hear babies cry all the time and i dont get pissed off and run in to kill the parent /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif im gonna take my 7mm, since i shoot it the best, in all positions. should i try to call in an open feild? so i can see the bear come in, and have time to get a good shot? its only june and im already very very excited. im kinda acting like its the day before opening day. will black bears react the same way as grizzlies? i saw on a website, www.bears.org i think, the guy said he took a cub from a mother in the wild, recorded thesound it made, and released it back to the mother. if this is true that guy has got some balls, he sais though that he has got swiped at before, many times. i always thought that black bears were extremley protective, i guess now not as much as i thought

I'm the one that got the bear cub distress call from Rich. I do like the sound that it produces. And I'm like a kid at christmas waiting for opening day. which is Aug.1.

I plan on using this call in the open clear cuts here, on the bear that I have been watching for a little bit. I have 1 steep cut that is 400 yards deep and 400 yards wide, with lots of loose rock in it. Which makes it real hard to stock in. I'm going to use this call there after I'm sure the bear isn't a sow with cubs. I personally wouldn't use this call blindly. locate the bear first then call. if you want to blind call I suggest using a fawn or rabbit distress for that.

I’ve been tootin’ the tube for a few years now, and have called in several bear and more than a few cougars with the standard distress calls. Haven’t tried a bear cub in distress yet, but so far the ‘dales have kept the critters off my back; even though I do most of the shooting with a camera. Now calling in grizzly country could add a whole new dimension to it! All we have here where I live and play are the standard issue black bears in varying colors, and I don’t worry much about them. I would certainly rethink this game if I were in grizzly country.
