New rifle

I got an itch that the ointment just ain't working. I am looking for a "dream rifle" for longer range open hunting in the lower 48. (I bowhunt for the most part) I am looking for something between .270 and .300 cal and want don't know how I feel about the extra cost of ammo for the Ultra, Short, etc mags. I have a budget of about $1500. What caliber, rifle etc would you all recommend. I currently am leaning towards a Tika in 270 WSM but think hard about the 7MM in savings on rounds. Accuracy is king and historically don't reload much. (kind of an oxymoron I know) Other options are the Browning A-bolt, and Savage. I am looking for synthetic and stainless. The budget includes bi-pods and glass.

Any help?

I set up a dream rifle sometime back for a friend of mine. I bought him the Browning "A" Bolt Medallion in a 300 Win Mag and mounted a really nice Bushnell Elite 4200 4x16x50 on it and sighted it in for him. The entire package cost less than $1500. He was pretty happy with it when he stroked the check to me.

He took it to Colorado and score on both Elk and a Mule Deer Buck. He was satified to say the least.

I'd go with the quality of a Browning and a 4200 Elite scope combination.

Savage 114 Classic in 300 win mag with a Bushnell 6500 2.5x-16x-42 scope. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Tikka T-3 Stainless Laminated in 338 Federal, or 300 win mag, topped with a 3.5X10 Zeiss Conquest.

I find myself going back to the wood stocked rifles.

I would find a closeout Sako 75 .300 Win Mag and top it with a Leupold. Tikka Stainless Laminated would be my second choice. Good Luck

Tripod has the idea, get a Sako or Kimber in either 7mm Rem. Mag or 300 Win. Mag and get a Meopta in a 3X9 or 3X10-12 or a Zeiss in the same power range. If you haven't looked thru a Meopta do your self a favor and at least take a peek. A Meopta will cost you roughly $500 to $600, but it's glass is comparable to Kahles or Swarovski. Remember, you said "dream rifle"!

For a rifle that is incredibly accurate out of the box, and you won't be wishing for a trigger job I would go with a Savage. You ought to have plenty of money left for decent glass. My only suggestion might be to go with a laminated stock instead of their synthetic. Savage synthetic stocks are actually plastic and are pretty flimsy. Their accuracy and the Accutrigger are phenomenal though.

Just go with a 270 Winchester. 130 grain bullet at 3000fps should get the job done plenty enough without taking your hearing or killing your shoulder.

It seems that many more animals are becoming immune to certain cartridges that don't have enough power ie: they absolutely must have a magnum ultra fast 5000fps+ bullet kill them dead like the hammer of Thor.

Sorry for my ranting. I know everyone has opinions and this is mine.

BigJake is right on the money. My best friend lives in Colorado and uses his 270 Win for Elk every year. Puts em down everytime.
Tikka has a stainless with wood stock available at Scheels now.. They are super nice looking rifles. The 270 Win I saw there had really nice wood on it. Iowa City Ia, wish I had the $$ I would have bought it.

heres what works for me.

280 rem - rem 700 stainless grey laminate 50th ann. edition
leupold rings - 2 pc bases - stainless
leupold 4.5 x 14 x 40 - gun metal grey.

can load the 280 with 100 grain to 3500 fps
all the way to 175 grain at 2700. kills anything in
north america with one shot; will not leave your shoulder
black and blue or your ears ringing on a cutline.
