New Savage 6mm/300WSM Finished (Update)

Just picked up my Savage from the gunsmith (Diamond T Rifles Craigmont, ID). I like fast rounds, so this one was built to get to 400-600 yards on coyotes as straight as possible. Barrel is a Lilja 3 groove 1-12 twist chambered in 6mm/300WSM with standard large shank .300 WSM action. I have 65 and 87 grain vmax bullets to start out with. Anyone own one of these? Almost all load data I can find is for the big Amax bullets and a fast twist. I know it's going to be hard on barrels, but the point is to have fun and I knew that going in. Built purely for speed and smiles. If anyone has any load data to pass on, I'd appreciate it. I also had an extra barrel chambered for this action in 22-243 Middlestead with the same purpose to put on for groundhogs this coming spring. Here's a pic of the rifle with suppressor.

I think it is an understatement that it will be hard on barrels, but it does look like a fun toy. I have been wanting me a 700+ yard prairie dog rig and this looks like it would suffice to say the least. I think that I would opt for a 1/9" or maybe even a 1/8" twist were it mine just so that I could use those VLD 105 grain bullets should I want to.

Keep us posted as to how well it shoots. I think you are going to enjoy it. I'm pretty sure that I would anyway.

Can't help with data but I love the concept. Be interested where you end up with velocities.

Had to go look how much powder ---
87 Vmax out of that should be awesome ---
I have 6x284 -- this puts it in shade ---
[beeep] the torpedoes -- full steam ahead --
Watching for posts --
Good luck --

Quick update: I had about 30 minutes to play today. I loaded 4 rounds with a 65 grain Vmax and one with a 87 grain Vmax. Just thought I'd launch a few over the chrony just to see if I was on the right track with my starting loads. Here are the results:

57 degrees, magneto speed chronograph, 28" Kreiger 1-12 twist, RP brass, Win WLR primers, IMR 7828 powder, Silencerco Specwar 7.62 suppressor.

65 Grain Vmax
69.5 grains = 4055 fps (mild)
70 grains = 4135 fps (safe, primer just starting to show flattening on the edge)
70.5 grains = 4201 fps (primer showed signs on flattening, but not clear to the edge)
71 grains = 4344 fps (primer flattened and starting to crater. I stopped here. Bolt lift was fine)

87 Grain Vmax, only tried one load with this due to time, but there's promise.
66 grains = 3863 fps (primer just starting to show signs of flattening near the edge, safe)

I think I'll be able to get somewhere in the 3900 fps range with the 87 grain Vmax, but I kind of doubt 4000 will be a safe load. Hopefully I'm surprised. Now to get it sighted in and on paper. I like the BC of the 87 grain bullets, but the sheer speed of the 65's is fun too. I'll run whatever shoots the tightest groups. I also want to try H1000 and Reloader 25. Reloaded powder in any form is still extinct here, so that one may have to wait. Recoil and sound are very pleasant with the can on. I didn't use muffs and wasn't uncomfortable with only a few shots. Now it's time to hit he reloading room.

That sounds like an awesome rig & who cares about barrel life, I get so tired of hearing about it on the internet. Its going to be one BADA$$ hotrod!!!

Another update. I loaded up a few with H1000. I figured being so close to the 7828 I tried that it would be similar in velocity. It wound up being much more mild. I did get a few on paper though and got it all sighted in. I'm happy with the groups, but am going to try more H1000 and shooting groups with the first loads of 7828 when I get the chance. All the H1000 loads were super mild and showed absolutely no pressure signs. I think I've found a good place to work up from though. Here's the data:
H1000 with 65 grain vmax
70.5 grains = 3785 fps
Here's the group

71.5 grains = 3946 fps

I also did one 3 shot group with an 87 grain vmax with 67.5 grains of powder reaching 3676 fps
Here's that group

I don't have much brass to play with and Winchester is sold out everywhere, so I'm only able to do a few at a time. Today the temps dropped way off to 32 degrees vs the 57 I had yesterday. It was 15 mph winds with light snow as well. Groups were shot at 100 yards out of a sled.
With so little info out on this round, I'll try and post up everything I learn in case anyone can use the data.

I don't know what you are so happy about. You missed that penny with every shot. Ship that gun to me and let me work on it for you. Then I will ship it back to you.

Someday.

Maybe.

I'll bring it down for a demo around April once the squirrels come out.

Nyuk nyuk nyuk! And if you miss them with the bullet it will not matter as the muzzle blast will surely take them out past 100 yards!

I remember a guy over on savageshooters did one of these last year. May want to look there. All I know is that an 87gr VMax pushing 4,000 would be an absolute hammer. Kind of gets me all worked up just thinking about it.
