New to Coyote Hunting (AZ)

Hey guys, im new to the world on calling predators. Me and my dad went out twice in the last 4 days, about 11 stands, and had nothing come in on any of them. We try and call with the hand calls, primos regulator 10, and regulator 14. Right now I am saving up for the Foxpro FX3. Im hoping that will make a big difference. I was wondering if you guys had some tips for hunting these guys, such as how to pick a stand, what to look for, how to call, all those rules of thumb. I have hunted big game for about 3 years now and have taken a elk, a deer, and an antelope, so i am not a complete newby. I shoot a 7mm-08.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, i really want to post that first yote thread.
thanks
Brennan

Welcome to the forums! 7mm-08 is a bit more cartridge than you need for coyotes unless finding remains isn't an issue.

Welcome to PM ,just keep at it right now they (dogs) are pairing up so be ready with what ever you take to shoot and take your time ,about 20 min at each set if you can blow air for that long. good luck

thanks alot man, i was curious as to how long to sit at a stand

Welcome to PM! All the information you'll need is right here. Sounds are a very small part of success. Proper set-up, location, knowledge of game, etc. is much more important. Read all the info you can find here, then ask specific questions. You'll soon be stack'n the predators.

You might wanna wait a little long then 20min at a stand if your looking for bobcats they take for ever to come in

will a cat normally come to the same call you use for a dog?
same with the foxes

As far as tips, get out a little ways from Phoenix. There are a few people who call out there around Phoenix. As far as what I look for is areas that hold coyotes. Scout for them like you would deer. When you find areas that have lots of sign hunt them. What I look for in a stand is somewhere I can be a little higher than where I think they will come through to the call. I also try to back myself into brush or rocks to breack up my outline. Try not to skyline yourself when going into a stand, and get tour vehicle hidden. Behind trees, in a wash, or behind a hill where you want to call the opposite side.

As far as calling goes, just try to sound like a hurt animal. There are websites that have different animal in distress sounds, listen to them and try to immitate them. Distress sounds work better than anything I have used, and the only time I use coyote sounds is to locate or stop coyotes.

Main thing is dont give up, I just went a month without hitting one and today I got 5, sometimes calling is slow like that, then you cant hardly keep up with them.

Hope this helps

that help a ton, i try and listen to the tape that came with the call, and it doesnt seem like i sound half bad, so im trying
im gonna try and go one day after school this week, then twice over the weekend

I never had a problem calling in one dog a day (it seems everytime I go out, I call ONE dog. Weather or not it dies, thats another story). It always seemed the shooting/killing the coyote was the hard part for me!

Are you the same kid that posts on pbaz?

PM either here or there and maybe we can set a time to go out together. I'm no expert but I am willing to show you what little I know.

I have been taken out by many good hunters from this board and dont have any issue returning the favor.
