Hello all,

I'm new to this forum and predator hunting. I just moved to fairbanks from anchorage Ak. I bought a CZ 452 American in 17hmr and love it. the guys at rimfirecentral really helped me make a good choice! So i was hopping some of you might be able to steer me in the right direction on a couple questions i have.

1. Is the 17 hmr enough gun for alaska pred. @ say 100yd?

2. should i buy a dif. rifle with larger caliber?

3. I've been looking at the CZ 527 American and remington 700 lv sf. The 700 seems to be the right kind of gun for the pred. hunter on the go.

4. what other guns should i be looking at?

I have a 30-06, 270 wby. and a 25-06 also. but i dont reload so I have been looking at the 223 cal. is this round more or less damaging to pelts then others?

Thanks for the help, Jake

Hey man. I am also new to Predator hunting, however I am located in Phoenix, Az. Nonetheless, I guess we could become forum freinds, or what ever the hell you want to call it. Anyhow, I was just at Bloody Basin, Az. and got my first yote with a .300 win. mag. Made a pretty big mess. I guess I'll have to be a better shot next time, huh?

What are you all looking at calling in? If it is fox that 17 will be good, maybe even a tad much if they are close range shots.

If you want to get into wolves I would higly suggest a .223. I have one, it is too much for fox, but I have heard it does wonders on wolves and coyotes.

I also hunt around the fairbanks area but i use a 12 gauge.Ive mostly called in fox around here. Ive been looking for a good rifle but im still unsure of what cal. 17= works well on fox but not enough for coyotes. 204= maybe to much for fox works well on yotes but not enough for wolves. 22-250,223 and such way to much for fox. Remingtons are nice just stay away from the sps its junk!Have you looked at savage? Good luck

Welcome to Predator Masters. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gifThe 17hmr is a small varmint gunmostly unsuitable for predator hunting. The 223 or even the 25.06 are better choices.

Thanks for the replies.

Mountaineer, I have not looked at savage yet. are you in the AF? have you been in the area long?

Redfrog, Would my 25-06 be a little to distructive on hides?
or should i just use it on the bigger game? can i push a tough bullet (barnes X) through a fox without it expanding?
is that a good idea? or would i just be better off buying a smaller cal.

thnaks again....

Yes im in the Air Force. Ive only lived here for about a year. I dont have any expereince with the 25-06 but sounds like big holes to me. Have you ever thought about a shotgun? i use #4 shot and i havnt really had anything with big holes. I dont sell my hides though. i keep them for myself.

I just got out of the Air Force, I work at Wainwright now.
I have never really considered a shotgun because I'v never really used them. I grew up around rifles and handguns. I plan on keeping all the hides I get as well.

welcome to the group CZ, i just got a CZ 527 varmint it shoots like a dream on paper ,havent got to try it on any fur yet except a snowshoe hare.i chose the .204 becouse i needed a calibur that would be fur frendly for the smaller predators (fox, lynx) but would still have enough pop for coyotes.for a good coyote/wolf rifle ive heard alot of good things about AR 15.next years divedend should cover that price tag i hope.hope this helps

Thanks trappertodd
thats exactly what I am looking for!

A dedicated fox and lynx gun i can use on yotes' that is fur friendly. You will have to keep me posted on how fur friendly that 204 is. It sure sounds like the ticket. How much more is ammo that a 223? Because i won't be reloading.

CZ

at sportsmans 204 ammo price about the same but not as many choices in maker. I think they stock 3 manufacture choices.CZ what did you do in AF?

Mountainer,

I just got back from sportmans. you are right about the ammo. They had a couple of 204's they had the cz 527V for 515. dunno if thats good or not. I was a Fire Fighter in the Air Force. now I make more and do less as a army civ. lol. What do you do?

Im a crew cheif on the F-16.I enlisted thinking i was going to be a fire fighter but they gave me this job. I havnt really looked at the cz but ive heard allot of good things lately. Sportsmans selection in 204 rifles isnt really good either. I will probably order whatever i decide on from the BX. most of the time they are cheaper.

I wonder if the 204 would be to much for fox and lynx. velocity is so high if you shot one of them at close range it might do horrible damage. But either way I'll end up with either that pr a 223. Do you live on base?

yeah i Live on base.We got lucky and moved right in last Feb when we got here from Az. I think a 223 would do more damage. A few guys on here have suggested berger bullets in the 204 with little to no fur damage. im not sure how it would work on fox or lynx.

Howdy local Fairbanksians, glad to see that others in the area on the board. I'm using a Marlin .22mag SSV for all my Fox/Lynx hunting with the LIghtForce 170 Hunter setup for night. For Wolf, I use an AR15. I've heard great things about the 6.5 Grendal for Wolf from UgashikBob, another fellow Alaskan. Anyways, there was a post in here about trying to get an Alaskan PM hunt or meeting together. If anybody is interested chime in or shoot me a PM. Or if anybody is interested in getting together locally for a hunt, let me know. All my hunting areas have been sniped out by trappers, so I'm searching for some new areas.

Yeah every place I have had suggested to me is full of trappers too. need to find some places to go. I am in for any local hunts I only work 3 Days a week so I'm off all the time. let me know

i could probably make it to either one. I replied to the post about a pm hunt but that was before my deployment got canceled. I trapped here on base this year but pulled my line because i thought i was leaving. I assure you i didnt have any affect on our fox population. I only caught a few martin.

I would look at the .222 remington, .221 fireball or the 22 hornet. All are proven fur freindly calibers with enough whack to put down animals as large as coyotes. The .222 is generally only 200 ftlbs slower than a 223, so really I would still use it on wolfs in a pinch.

But I would steer clear of trying to get a do all rifle. Get one for coyotes and under, I reccomend the .222 for that. Then use your 25/06 for wolfs. Main reason I say dont get a once all rifle is that wolfs are in general hunted seperate from other predator hunting. Wolfs in an area will soon run out any other predators, so youd be pretty much wasting your time trying to call in fox's where wolves are present.
