I've been on here talking about getting a 6.5 or 7mm Mauser a bit lately, then I walk into the gun shop and wouldn't you know it saw a deal on a Remington LSS 7mm ultra mag with a Bushnell elite 3200 and a bipod that I couldn't pass up. I have never loaded for anything even in the ballpark. I know it's a whole different animal from my 30's and 35 whelens, anybody got any hot tips to get me started?

A good buddy has one, actually on his second. It's pretty deadly. I second Retumbo, it's what he uses behind a 160 gr Barnes tsx.

yeah, either H-1000 or Retumbo, whichever I can find. Cases are harder to come by than I thought, Does anybody have any actual experience with how long it takes to shoot the barrel out of one?

Ya I can check with my friend for sure but iirc his first one started losing accuracy between 800 and 1k rounds. He liked it so much he went right out and bought another one.

buy a keg of Retumbo and a 1000 Fed 215's. 160g and heavier is where it will shine, I would maximize the case's ability and shoot a 180g Berger Hybrid or a 175g Nosler accubond. Also, a muzzle break on this hard kicker is gold, very fast snap. Williams muzzle break is one of the very best.

I have been shooting the 7 STW since 1989, 180's at 3150 and your Ultra mag will best that, trust me. Buy all the brass you can get when you see it, don't wait till you run out and then start looking.

Also, you can always set the barrel back and make a 7 mag match out of it if your gunsmith has a match reamer, and the 7mm Mashburn Magnum is also nothing to sneeze at pushing the 160g accubond at 3200 and not full length size the cases.

Yes ackleyman, I see what you mean with the cases, they seem to be in short supply! Kind of amazing how I never realized I needed one until 5 minutes before I bought it! I just went to the gun shop to look at scopes for a 6.5 build.... now I have another project...

I'd rechamber to a 7 rem mag. I was only seein about 200fps different in it and my rem mag, granted that was book loads. Ultra mag brass is like unicorn turds these days. I loaded some with us869 and 130 Sierra bthp that were a nightmare on Arizona course deer. 105gr make a pound of powder disappear quick though. Think I settled on 103gr

I love my 7mm RUM. I recently worked up a load using the Barnes 145 gr LRX and H1000. That load is chronographed at 3375 fps. I then had a CDS dial made up for it from Leupold and it is an absolute killer round.
I use H1000 exclusively and have shot everything from 110 gr Barnes TTSX to 160 gr Barnes TSX.
You won't be disappointed in that caliber.
