New Western MD Coyote hunter needs help

I would like to get started hunting coyotes but am not sure really where to start. I live in Western Maryland and hunt deer and turkey here but want to hunt coyotes as well. Coyote season is year round here and can be hunted at night from October to March I believe. I would appreciate any answers to the following questions or would like to meet up with anybody in the area.

1) I bought a Dan Thompson Red Desert Howler call ( it is a reed caller). Is this a good predator call to use? Any tips on using it?

2) Are there any special tools or gear I need to have besides standard hunting gear?

3)Are the pelts worth selling in this area? If so where would I go?

4) What is the best and most ethical way to dispose of the carcass?

I appreciate any and all answers and advice on these questions. Thank you in advance and hope to meet up with some fellow hunters soon.

Get yourself a couple good predator videos first off! You will learn so much watching them.. Howling won't be easy for a newbie get a good distress call like a rabbit I suggest a closed reed for new guys they are just easier to learn on! Or you can get a electronic caller like a foxpro if your willing to spend the money!! Don't get frustrated get out there and go for it my number one rule is call were there are coyotes and always watch your down wind side make sure yyou can see the coyote before he smells you! They will always circle down wind! And other coyotes will dispose of the ones you kill!!!!!

Not sure how they react down there. I know up here in western md they are very quiet. Also with the terrain we have there is no such thing as hunting with the wind. It swirls so much that you cant perdict it. Most of the coyotes taken here are taken by deer hunters and trappers. Those that have success call real quiet and for about an hr. Not sure if this will help. Your down in what we would call centeral md the start of the flatlands.

I'm not too far from ya Chefbb. I am just along the mason-dixon in PA about 15 miles from ya.

If you have deer stands, use them to call. It gets your scent above ground level and you can glass your areas a whole lot better usually. And the coyotes will hang out in those same areas.

I am not really sure about Maryland, but I take my pelts to Paul's Fur Shed in Greencastle,PA. Not too far from your place. You can always take the pelt and get it tanned to keep as well.

Check out FOXPRO's line of different e-callers and hand calls at FOXPRO High Performance Game Calls

As far as weapons go, your deer rifle will work just fine.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the advice and tips. Would like an opportunity to meet up with you sometime DuffMan. Are you able to hunt in MD? Hope you all have a great day.

I have another question. What is a good quality light to mount on a Savage Arms .243 for night hunting? I would like something of good quality but at a reasonable price. Thanks!

Not able to hunt MD, this year. But I would like to start hunting predators in Maryland next season. I think I am missing out on some really good hunting. We could hook up somewhere and make a few stands together.

Go through a couple pages of the Night hunting forum and that should help ya out. I personally use a Lightforce Walkabout light. The battery is nice to strap around your torso and the light it's self is like the feather. Brightness factor is astounding. Another great feature with Lightforce lights is the dimmer switch on the battery pack. Keep the light a little dim for scanning. Once a predator is within range, bring it up to your desired brightness to make a verification of your target and send one home.
