Does anyone ever call for yote at night in ky. Since it is illegal to spotlight how could this be done. I would love to try it i have been trying calling during daylight without any luck. I can go to places that i have called during the day and at night the howling will make your skin crawl. I was wondering if anyone has used any sort of night vision to hunt at night and is it leagal?

If you can get some snow and a full moon you can see pretty good. Other than that I think the night vision is going to be your only other alternative.

Last night was a perfect night for calling. Good frosty nights with a full or near full moon are good. You need to use the fencerows and sit in the deep shadows. They see very well on moonlit nights but seem to be unable to see well into the shadows . They are far less wary at night. This time of year pairs are likely and hard to work with.Any distress sound made with a mouth call works well. Electronics are not allowed. Jimmie

So is night hunting legal in KY? I thought from prior conversations that it was illegal or that some Conservations officers had the opinion that it is illegal.

Can we hunt coyote after sunset?

I was talking to a C.O. while i was at Lloyd WMA and he told me that your not allowed to hunt Coyotes at night in KY. Is there some place where its in writing that your allowed to hunt at night, or not allowed to hunt yotes at night? I looked through the Hunter guide and couldn't find much towards Coyote hunting. I know they are more active at night where i hunt them but never tried at night because i wasn't sure of the law.

According to Ky. Afield call in show, you can hunt coyotes at night using NV or moonlite. No spotlighting. Your allowed to use a flashlite to walk to and from your stand, but shining it accross open fields is a no-no. You cannot cast the beam of a light in a manner to "harass wildlife". I've been thinking about trying it at night myself. Jimmy, Thanks fot the info, I didn't know you could't hunt with electronics at night. Where did you see or here that rule? kyray.

I went to the South East Christian Wild game feed last night. There were a bunch of Fish and Wildlife officers there so I asked a SGT if it was legal. He didn't hesitate at all and said that yes it was totally legal. Nightvision or moonlight just like the last post stated.

He also told me that this year there has really been a huge increase in the amount of calls and questions regarding coyote hunting in KY.

I think I'm going to try some night calling on our next full moon.

I too was told that night vision and electronic calling devices are ILLEGAL. This also leaves out laser sighting devices as they would project a light making them illegal.

However calling with mouth calls by moonlight is totally legal. Best weapon is a shotgun and BB'S for this.I know this is a limitation but it's well worth learning to use.Jimmie

It's easier to get them to howl at night, i usually wait till 12AM on full moon lit nights & try to get them to howl, if they do, it is a piece of cake from there on! got to mind the wind & keep the volume down as sound travels better on clear nights. It Dont take much neither, just 15 seconds worth of soft calling, set & wait 5-10 minuts, they will be on ya quick if the sound is right. My weapon of choise is either the 3"mag 12 or my 10/22mag. Called one within 15 steps of me couple of nights ago, he seen me raise my gun & was gone, so setting in the shadows as someone else hear suggested is good advice.

Coyote#1,

Why do you wait until Midnight?

I hunt under the moon in Minnesota and do just fine as soon as the moon is high enough to see by. Two or three nights before the full moon it's light enough to see by the time the light has left the western sky.

The CO I spoke with specifically said that Night vision was legal. It doesn't say anything about it in the KY manual either.

Randy, I live close to & hunt a wild life management area, the coyotes in the area are hunted & messed with alot & are always spooky. Everyone around hunts the wildlife management areas for 12.50 a year. Not a bad price for the ground we have access to! we just have lots of hunters in state & out that come here to hunt. Ive called in several coyotes over the last three yrs in these areas (all different times of night & day") I always get better results late at night when the traffic has slowed & things have settled down. Night visions is legal in KY? Hmm,i bet that dont include N.V rifle scopes!

I'm waiting for Fish and Wildlife in Frankfort to get back to me with more info on these questions. Should know something soon fellows.kyray.

Kentucky Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement just e-mailed me back and said OK to use night vision scope as long as it doesen't project an artificial light. I'm not sure if the infred ilaminator on some nightvision scopes would be considered artificial light. I may have to e-mail them another question. What do you guys think? Can the Illuminator be turned off or removed from a scope? Let's here from a NV user out there. As for calls legal, only hand or mouth operated are allowed, like Jimmy had reported.kyray.

I would think they would consider the IR to be an artificial light. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean that its not a light.

Although most CO's would never know the difference.

KYRay, I am sure glad you had that discussion with Frankfort, it clears up something that has been of concern to me for a while. That was my understanding too, but you get conflicting info from some of the Cons. officers. I do hunt with Night Vision, and am in fact a dealer for one of the larger NV Co.s in the US. The question of exactly what defines a projected light may be one of definition- is it a "light" if you can't see it with the naked eye? I hope not, because those IR illuminators do add a lot at times. On every scope I have used they can be turned off and usually removed, too. While a good Gen 2 or Gen 3 scope might not need it on a night with a little bit of moonlight, or a clear starlit night, on those dark, cloudy nights it sure is handy, and it can usually be useful in lighting up the shadows. The best thing is that the critters' eyes really shine in the NV with even just a little bit of added IR light projected.
I would sure appreciate a forwarded copy of that email reply you got from them, if you don't mind. timberman@direcway.com
