hey guys i know you can hunt coon and a few other differnt animals at night but im not quite sure if cyotes are legal or not the hunting laws do not specify and i cant find a gamewarden who knows anything bout it at all can you guys help
thanx

Night hunting of coyote's is legal with a few stipulations. No lights of any kind may be on your person. Mouth calls only. There must be enough natural light to possitively identify your target.Shot size no larger than bb

Hunting under the full moon phases is about all we have. I suggest a shotgun over a scoped rifle even though on brighter nights you can see well through the scope.Set up in the darkest shadows, the bigger the tree the better! It is doable and some of the most exciting hunts you will have all season. Jimmie

We are allowed to night hunt for coyotes in KY, and can use manual or electronic callers. We can't use lights by law, however, anybody thought about something called Night Vision?

WAITAMINUTENOW......... A buddy of mine from S. IN said wasn't so sure about that in my last post- so I checked the 2202-3 KY Hunting Guide, and despite the fact that I know we used to be able to do anything short of HAND GRENADES to kill a coyote, the latest is, regrettably, this: "Mechanical and electronic(recorded sound tape) calls may be used to take grounhogs, coyotes, wild hogs, English sparrows and starlings during daylight hours". Even worse and senseless; " No person shall take wildlife except raccoons, opossums, fishes, and frogs, with lights or other means designed to blind wildlife or make wildlife visible at night". Yet kill a few of them around here off a farmer who's been losing a calf or three a year and let his Mrs. whose favorite kitty got eaten in the front yard see them, and they'll pin a medal on ya!!
Well, guess I'm going racoon huntin'.....

I AM FROM SOUTH POINT OHIO JUST ACROSS THE RIVER FROM YOU ALL! WE KILL ALOT OF DOGS AND FOXES AT NIGHT. BUT I JUST GOT INTO COON CALLING. ANY IDEAS?

It is strictly mouth calls only. The no projected lights rule leaves out even lazer sighting systems. However night vision is legal if you have it or can afford it.

There is a game warden somewhere in the state that will hang you higher than a kite if you disobey even one of hte rules. I am tickled pink he transfered out of my area. His statement was he would write us up for even having a flashlight in the vehicle. He does not like this and would rather not have to mess wiht it. jimmy in ky.....i sent an email to frankfort on jan 5th about this subject and they replied by saying you can hunt coyotes in ky at night but you cannot use any light or night vision scopes...now whether you can use night vision goggles etc i do not know and the sad thing about it is you can ask 10 different game wardens and get 5-10 different answers....i think the time has come to be able to hunt coyotes at night with lights in ky and i guess i will keep griping about it until someone listens....trapperdoc

That is about typical for the wisdom we get from Frankfort, Trapperdoc. Just how the heck do they think we are supposed to hunt them at night with no lights and no NV? Truth probably is they really don't want us hunting them at all, but they are afraid of losing their cushy jobs by making ALL the hunters mad and saying so! I would like to see a copy of that Email, if you still have it. Ya know sometimes my raccoon call sounds an awful lot like a rabbit squaller and no telling what might run out in front of that coon I was about to shoot....

yea i still have it ..send me an address or something and i will e-mail or snail mail you a copy...i have to go to ohio to call at night with lights i have bought out of state license for several years and one year all i bought them for was to call at night(no deer or turkey hunting)...trapperdoc

I've been hearing & reading post were people have been saying it was illegal to hunt coyote's with shotguns using shot size larger than bb.So I gave Frankfort a call at dept.f&w they told me there were no shot size restrictions for coyote's.So I prefer letting the air out of them with 3in.mag #4buck.

PS.knock'em dead out to 50/60yds.

I wish they would all get their crap together.I have not seen one word in the books about night vision being illegal. However the book does state that shot size larger than bb is prohibited.

I've also heard the contradictions to these rules myself. So I stick to bb's and tritium paint on my shotgun bead. This way I know they can't hang my butt to the flagpole. The way htey have the wardens spread out I never know which one I am liable to meet, will it be the one that told me this or the one that told me that? That is a true tale above about the one warden. He was about half hostile even discussing it!

Hunting at night during the full moon phase is not that dificult once you figure out the new set of rules the dogs make for the night. They can see a lot better than you so you need to use diferent setups at night. You need to be in complete shadow deep enough to hide your movement.Calling in tripples is not out of the question at night.I've called as many as five dogs in three stands at night. The best and easiest night I've had I made only two stands and called in three at the second stand getting two of them.Jimmie

Just so you all will no,i have a friend of a friend that sets on the game comission. i hunt with him alot for deer and turkey out in the grayson area. i took him out night calling for yotes the last two weekends in ohio...got him hooked!!! he was on the phone to his friend last week saying his piece about no lights in ky for yotes..he is going to do all he can. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Biggun,
he has called three or four of them in the last week im not sure who all he has called. he was fired up though!! i hope he can do some good, there is some fine yote hunting over there...he has the dift to talk.he also knows alot of people in high places.. say,are you still looking for someone to go to the eastern hunt with?? i have plans to hunt out to grayson saterday..

keekeeyelp- Very good thinkin' That's the way to get something positive done in Frankfort. I know a couple of the local state reps, let me know if I can do anything on this end to help. Here's a thought- farmers would most likely be in favor of about anything that would keep coyotes from becoming more of a problem w/ their livestock- what about involving Farm Bureau?
If you get to this end of the state look me up- we're infested with 'em!

Kytimberman,I would say it wouldnt hurt for you to call them.the more people that get involved the better. even if it is just wrighting letters or sending e-mails. i will see if i can get him to call the farm bureau. plus i had a farmer call me last week..said he had lost some goats..wants me to see if i can call in a few of them yotes. i will have him call also. i also see the carter co game warden alot i am going to talk to him also.maybe something good will come out of this. i am going down to the eastern hunt..is that down around you?

Farmers and a few nuts like me are what has gotten us this far.I say pour the coal to 'em.With all the pressure they are starting to get I don't know how well lights would work, the dogs are getting spooky. I'm heading out now. It's bright enough I can see the crosshairs really well /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Jimmie

I agree... pooooor it to them...everyone needs to call.. lights will be a beg help..they are in ohio.let us know how you done last night. i didnt get to hunt had to work. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That's right boys, we need to pour it on while we might be getting a little bit of attention from Frankfort. I'll do as you suggested, keekeeyelp. And while I would hate to see our farmer friends losing more livestock, the more noise they make along with us, the more likely we can get this changed- there will be a good bit of resistance from many of the game wardens, as they will see a risk of having a lot of deer poaching going on. The fact is, any nimrod can kill deer with as many as we have in this state, all you have to do is sit still for a little while and be able to shoot halfway straight. But coyotes hunting presents a challenge that make even spring gobblers look stupid! Y'all did'nt miss anything last night- although you could see like it was daytime, the mercury was right at the zero mark at bedtime!
Hey Jimmie- you aren't more than an hr. from me- wanna team up one evenin'? I'm sure you could teach me something, and I would'nt have to learn it all the hard way! If those dogs down there are pressured, I think I have a bunch of green ones right here, as I'm the only one I have heard of locally who is crazy enough to run around the woods in the dark half the night! Send me an Email if ya do.
