Night hunting with 22lr Ar15

We had a very similar situation in our state, only rimfire and shotgun to hunt at night with artificial light, including NV... I used a couple AR style rimfire rifles with Thermals and was very successful, but I also used magnum rimfire as well including 17HMR, and 22WMR.
We also got legislation passed last year to change the caliber restriction rimfire to .224 caliber center fire.
I would suggest getting involved and try to change some of your states regs.

We are involved and trying to get at least 22wmr. I can't complain to much we can use night vision and a scatter gun at night it works and tons a fun. But we are missing a few that don't want to cross that magic line and just skirt us. What's crazy is they allow a 308 during the day but for whitetail no center fire. I think I am gonna try a 22lr with the Ir patrol gun mounted and just take head shots as to not cripple them or educate them.
Thanks Skinney I love watching your vids but you never show the money shot...

Thank you! I'll have to work on those "money shots"

The night hunting restriction in MA refers to rifles with a chambering no larger than that of .22LR.

WRT air rifles, I inquired with DFW, and air rifles are good to go. But, they're still restricted to the language of night time hunting restrictions.

"Nothing chambered larger than a .22 caliber long rifle rimfire or .38 caliber handgun between 1/2 hr after sunset and 1/2 hr before sunrise"

No name
Yes it spells out not to chamber larger than 22lr.

Chris
I didn't realize there was restrictions on the air rifles.

That was a determination made by DFW, with regard to MGLs (it's a "rifle"). Someday, maybe the legislature will alter the MGL to enable the DFW to add some common sense to these regs. Until then...

BTW, I have a spreadsheet of permissible weapons, which DFW provided to me. Give me an email address and I'll forward you a copy. There might be some slight changes, since the modification to the bear season happened after I received the file.
