Night vision optic recommendations

My buddy and myself are thinking about ramping up our night hunting this year and switching from "kill lights" and going to some form of night vision optics. Making this decision smack dab at Christmas time is definitely limiting the funds,..so leaning towards the cheap side is a factor. I understand you get what you pay for,..just curious if the one like the ATN Aries MK390 are s step in the right direction or a waste of money. Most shots (if not all shots) will be 150yds or less. Thanks!

To my understanding, the 3-12x model doesn't have a focus and ATN is offering free upgrades to the 5-18x models to people who are already on a waiting list, again if I understand correctly. There are currently some issues with the X-Sight. You can find more info on it by looking in the Night Calling section.

I had an ATN Spartan 410 Gen 1 scope and used it for two seasons. The Gen 1 scopes are very lacking. With a strong illuminatir you can make a killing shot around 60 yards, and maybe 100 yards under the right conditions. If you will be using the scope for calling, I cannot recommend it, but if shooting over bait it can be made to work with other types of IR lights. Basically you will be disappointed with a Gen 1.
