Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x56mm Endless Reticles

Looking at the NXS 5.5-22x56mm or 8-32x56mm. The choices of reticles is mind numbing. I know my ammo and my rifle pretty well. Everything going down range is hand loaded specifically for that weapon. With exposed turrets do I really need all that clutter in my scope? When I shoot long range I dial for elevation I don't usually hold over, not even for medium range shots. Am I missing something or are these new reticles just shiny objects to turn our heads?

BTW I'll be using this scope for taking coyotes a lot, but come deer, antelope and elk season i'll switch it over to the .300 Win. Mag. I have always been versatile with my optics. I don't choose to buy less expensive scopes therefore I can usually not outfit all my rifles at once.

The 5.5x22 is plenty for hunting situations. What reticles are you considering? Personally i like and have the MOAR reticles in my Nightforce scopes.

I like simple. Either MOAR or MILDOT Illuminated the other ones are way too busy. Too much crap in the reticle. Does the MIL designations actually help you much?

Yes if you understand the Milliradian system vs. MOA, thats personal preference. If its standard MIL-DOT the graduations arent fine enough for me personally.
Most importantly make sure your reticle matches your turrets! MOA/MOA or MIL/MIL

The Np-R1 and the MLR are the 2 best NF reticles for my use.
One is MOA and one is MIL so you can pick your favorite flavor.
Make sure you read and remember what Lefty said about turrets matching reticle.

In short, no, they are not just shiny objects. You may have no use for them but they are useful in a lot of practical applications such as multiple shots at long range where you don't have time to spin the turrets to adjust elevation.

PRS matches, for example, are growing like crazy and many times the shooter has to get 5-10 shots off in under 90 seconds at targets ranging from 300-1200+ yards. Dialing for drop is just not practical in this scenario.

The NPR1 is my favorite but i'm a MOA snob...

Surprised no love for the Np-2DD for simplicity? I have had a few & still have a couple. For a hunting scope I don't think there is a better reticle. Very fast acquisition, quick centering & an unobscured view. Even works well in low light without illumination (sometimes time is a factor).

Personally I think the MOAR is the best reticle that NF makes (they finally got it right keeping fine graduations on the horizontal bar, just wish it had .5MOA hash marks in it's extremities for ranging), but if you wanted simple & uncluttered reticle, not sure that's it... However, I'm betting you will start liking the stadia once you use it.

You're right it's not very tidy, but I like the MOA marking very much. If it was Mil i would not have bought it.

I'm sure you will be happy with it. Yes it's a little busy but stadia is much more usable (if you change your style), & not just for holdovers... After you play with it a bit, I bet you start using it more & more.

My next scope will be a NightForce SHV F1 4-14x50mm. I think the NXS is a little too much scope for the AR so it will go on the bolt gun and the SHV F1 looks perfect for the LWRC

I've got NF NXS scopes on every centerfire I own, all except one of them has the NP-R1 reticle with the other being NP-R2. At first I thought the NP-R1 would possibly seem a little to busy or feel cluttered but that wasn't the case at all and I much prefer the R1 over the R2.

It's taken me awhile to afford NF on everything but it's been money well spent as they are excellent scopes and if I never have anything better or worse, I'll be perfectly happy with that.

Maybe something to consider, you can almost buy a near new condition 3.5-15x50 NF NXS for close to what a brand new SHV cost. Nothing against the SHV but I think the NXS is a better scope and will hold its value better down the road. I've purchased a couple 3.5-15x50 NXS in the $1250-$1350 range. Both had zero stops and one was HS ZS and came with a set of NF rings and a level.

So enlighten me, but the MOAR and the NPR-1 are almost he same reticle...

MOAR

I think the MOAR reticle is basically an improved version of the NP-R1 reticle. NF discontinued the NP-R1 a while back so my next NF will be one with the MOAR reticle but I don't have any with the reticle as of now.
