Nikon Customer Service

My 440 rangfinder started giving erratic readings and wouldn't read past 150 yards so I sent it back to Nikon to get fixed. I realize there is only a 1 year warranty and the rangefinder was about 3 years old. Today I get an estimate for $135.35 to fix it and send it back to me. I didn't expect them to fix it for nothing but a few dollars short of what I paid for it is insane. It cost me $4.05 to send it to them and they wanted 12.00 for return shipping. By the time I finished my rant the person I spoke to ( she didn't speak english well) agreed to send it back at no charge. So now I'm in the market for a rangefinder and may have 4-5 nikon scopes for sale here soon. Nikon needs to take some customer service lessons from RCBS.

I have heard similar stories with their rifle scopes and binoculars as well. Look no further than Pentax if you choose to switch optics... I have never paid for anything but shipping for replacement/repairs on their products with no questions asked.

Va, Sorry you were displeased with the service you received. Electronic optics these days for the most part are not worth repairing, not just Nikon's but others as well. If you look around on this site I think you will find that Nikon Customer Service has taken good care of those who have needed CS services.
Nikon does have very good warranties on it's optics.
Check them out below if you are interested?
Va., I would sure hate for you to get rid of your Nikon Scopes but I am sure there would be plenty of guys here who would be happy to pick them up from you.
Here's Nikon's Bino/Scope warranty.

Hey it's nice to know not everyone gets the shaft.

Nikon does have very good warranties on it's optics.

You call 1 year "very good" ?

Here's Nikon's Bino/Scope warranty.

Is there something there I don't know ?

I can't begin to count how many times Iv'e recomended nikon optics to friends and they went straight out and bought them. I would have felt better if they had come out and said it would be expensive to fix and offer a discount on another model. But instead I had to try to comprehend what was being told to me by someone who sounded like they just eluded the Border Patrol. I wasn't looking for something for nothing, but expected a company to stand behind it's products. For example I had to send my Lyman DPS3 back because it quit working. It was a year or so out of warranty, less than 2 weeks later it arrived, fixed and ready to go. Imagine that, a company that stands behind it's products. Two other companies I can name right off, FoxPro and RCBS go above and beyond for their customers and haven't gone broke doing it. Okay I'm finished with my rant. And Nikon too.

Through the years I have met a few customer service rep's regarding my equipment and my experience is as follows...

My good list: Pentax Optics, Swift Optics, Sportdog E-collars, and Zink Calls... I have never had any of these companies question me when contacting them with issues, they seem genuinely interested in making right with the consumer and getting them back in the field as fast and cheap as possible.

My bad list: Benelli(sad but true), Sightron Optics, Tritronics E-collars... Benelli gets their stuff fixed right, but its super slow and extremely expensive. I shipped them a Franchi I-12 with a mis-machined bolt guide and they said it was assembled improperly and I would have to pay for a new receiver... I told them to keep it. Tritronics were easy to work with, but costly and for some reason I was getting to know their CS department way too well. Sightron CS is a joke, they left me on hold, ran me through red-tape left and right and finally I gave up on them as well.

I don't mind paying to have my gear fixed when its necessary, but when I pay top dollar for a "good" warranty, I want the service to reflect that... some companies are beginning to forget that the initial cost of their product is a reflection of their ability and willingness to back it in the event of failure.

If people expected Nikon to stand behind all there products without question they probably couldn't afford to be in business. Their line of electronic optics is pretty long when you start adding the cameras into it. One year warranty is pretty standard for any electronic equipment.

if you do decide to get rid of your nikons let me know i may be interested in the scopes as i've had 5 throughout the years and no problems with any of them yet

My point exactly. Electronics are evolving more and more everyday. A RangeFinder you have from 2 years ago are all buy out dated. Especially on a lower end budget gadget. Nikon makes a great product. That's for sure. And for one to gripe about not getting a 3 year old RF fixed for free, that's silly.

I mean scopes make few changes year to year. The electronic stuff just doesn't keep up. I don't understand how an entire company is now garbage because they won't fix something 2 year out of warranty. I bet you turned down the extra product protection plan offered at the register to, huh? Everyone does want everything for nothing.

Ahh... electronics.. I just love buying them new every year. Printers, computors.. the list goes on. They are usually obsolete within a year. Why? Cus a new model came out, and you cant find printer cartridges, new programs that wont work with your current operating system in your current PC. Electronics are sometimes obsolete before you get them out of the box. lol

nikon service is poor have 3 nikon scopes last one i bought in the usa will no hold zero. its got a lifetime warrenty (only in usa) nikon uk will not fix it say it has to go back to usa and i have to send it. its only two years old (if i buy a honda motocycle and it goes wrong i dont have to send it back to japan to be fixed)so why cant my scope be fixed in the uk?all the best scope makes have a world wide warrenty.
