i shoot long range target and do long range hunting so i need a new scope that will be rugged and be dead with the adjments. so which one the nikon or nightforce .is the nightforces really worth the money ? or would anyone else have a different scope they would recomend

Sorry, but I see no reason to spend $1000+ on a scope! Nor will the wife let me! So I say go with Nikon and the money you save you can buy another rifle!

Not sure how good the nikon is however I do know that the nightforce adjustments are precise and the entire scope is very rugged.

You are kidding - right? I have heard from some bench shooters that Sightron is up and coming.

I have and am a fan of both of these products, and would buy which ever one you can afford. Meaning if you can spring for the NF, do it! If not you will still be happy. The Monarch is not a true "tactical" scope, but I have been using mine as such with the adjustments and have no complaints.

On another note, I have been hearing good stuff about the Vortex Viper PST. Sort of the middle between the elite and entry level tactical scopes. Has 68 MOA of travel!.

One last thought, the full size NXS NF is heavy!

Just my $.02

While I have two Monarchs that I do like, they didn't do as well in box testing as I thought they should have. I personally don't own a NF, but have had the pleasure of using one on several occasions. They are top notch and are as billed. If money isn't an issue, get the NF.

If the NF isn't in the budget, look at Sightron. Every SIII and Big Sky model I have put through box testing has preformed great.

While I consider my self a Leupold man (VX-3 or better)I do own three Nikon scopes and am very satisfied with thier quality and value .

You might want to look at a Zeiss Conquest with target knobs.I have been using the Zeiss for a number of years and find for the money they are hard to beat. The high quality optics which in MHO have the N.F. beat. I will not flame the N.F. as it is a fine scope and has it's place if weight is of no issue.
On my Predator rifle, Kimber Montana .223 weights in at
6lbs--9ozs with Zeiss Conquest 4.4X14X50 with side focus and target knobs. If I really want to go light I use my Zeiss 2.5X8X32 which takes 7 ozs off, which is getting close to a 6lb rifle. They have a great web-site and more choice on reticles of any other scope. John

I guess I must be missing something here, but, IMHO, a NF and a Monarch are not in the same league.

Is a NF better than a Nikon? Depends on how one defines better. Is it clearer, brighter, etc. Yes! Is it worth the extra money? Only the person that pays the extra money knows for sure.

I too once said I would never spend $1000 on a scope. However, since that time I have added a Lupe VX-7 and three Swaro's. No NF's yet, but there is still time.

I have always felt when it comes to optics, buy the very best you can afford and then add another 15-25%. You won't be sorry.

Do like I do, buy your clothes at Sam's Club instead of that trendy men's shop. Haha, never been in a trendy men's shop. I thought J.C. Penny was as good as it got. My wife says I shouldn't brag about that as I am a slob when it comes to clothes.

Fancy clothes...top notch scope, Hmmmm?

Oh well, that's a different topic.

exactly what i used to say, until i bought a NF, now i have three, even sold off my MKIV's and bought NXS's to fill the void. If you shoot LR out to 1200 or beyond for that matter , you need equipement you can rely on, i have had nikon optics a long time ago and they are great, so is their warranty, but you cant beat a NF NXS IMHO, unless you get a USO or S&B. once you drink the NXS kool aid, you will be hooked.

my rifle weights bout 7 pounds no scope so weight is kinda a issue . i use it as a long range rifle and hunting rifle .. its a remington 700 in .308 ..the cheap scope ive got on it now costed me a nice buck last year b/c it poi had shifted on me...claim buster i buy clothes from the military surplus store and walmart so does a cheap 4 pack of shirts and bdu's count as fancy? lol...

Back in the day I would of told someone they were nuts paying $1000+ for a scope, but if you plan on shoot 1000yds and dialing the turrets back in forth alot the NF is gonna be spot on, alot of other brands havent met that standard in turret consistancy.

I have a 5.5x22 on my .308 and am very pleased with it.

night force falls into a cadigory of high end optics, i own nikon optics, but dont see how they would compare to night, swaoro, zeiss, etc. apples and oranges imo.... i have zeiss optics as well...

Maybe this article is relevant, maybe not..but it woulda been fun to watch and see the faces of 20 odd shooters with big money equipment, get whipped by a stock ruger no.1 and a scope some folks on here would not have on their .22

Make sure you read it all including equipment used....nothing replaces practice time and knowing your rifle..........X

Considering none of the equipment list shows Nightforce or Nikon I'd say NOT relevant. Also, obvious the 18 yo kid that wipped butt (kudos to him thats impresive), shooting a custom, has spent MANY years of "practice time and knowing your rifle". And were did an 18yo get $5k to sink into a rifle though. And why didn't someone stop him. To have 5K in a 40x with a Leupy on it is kinda steep to ME!

Nightforce is not needed to kill deer or even shoot paper. However, if you NEED absolute adjustments & your other equipment is good enough to gain advantage from that precision by all means look at night force (as mentioned; Sightron SIII would be another to look @). I'd rather have a great rifle with a superb optic than 10 so-so guns. In a world were there are so many things that can go wrong in that once in a lifetime moment. Something I could have prevented (faulty equipment) needs be no worry.
