Nikon Prostaff Scopes

I looked at at a 3x9 Prostaff scope to put on my 444 Marlin. It looks like it will fit my needs for hunting in heavy timber. Is it a decent scope for the money? I know I can take it back if I don't like it. I just don't want to go through all the trouble of mounting it and getting it on paper to find out it's junk.

I have two of these. One is on a .270 and the other is on a .444. Never had a problem with either. I have put at least 100 round through the .444 and the scope remains solid, clear and holds zero. I think you will be happy if you choose to go with the Nikon. IMO.

Do you know if it's shockproof? One website is showing that it is and another doesn't show it is.

It will absolutely take the pounding. I put a PROSTAFF 3-9 on my .375 H&H 4 years ago and then recruited 3 young guys at the range to put 60 rounds through it with no problems at all. So glad I didn't have to do anything more then sight it in!
Another scope to consider is Nikon's P-Rimfire 2-7x32 BDC scope. Yes it is listed as a rimefire scope but it is still built tough. The 2-7 will give you a lower profile and 7 power enough to make a longer range shot if needed. You can dial in the BDC as well. This scope does come as .25 inch of adjustment at 50 yards just FYI. Another option might be Nikon's P-223 3X carbine scope. This compact fixed power scope is one of my favorites for hog hunting in TX. Just throwing some other potential options out there, all under $200. At the end of the day all Nikon's scope's are backed by Nikon's No Fault Policy.
Drop me a note if you have any question's.

I have a Pro Staff on a BP rifle. Been there two years and still on it going strong. Think they're made by Timex. Take a lickin and keep on tickin!!

I have a 3x9 on my muzzleloader and a 4-12 on my 223. The 3-9 has taken quite a few shots from the ML and it hasn't phased it one bit. I like both of them just fine and would definitely buy again. I am considering buying a TC 204 before I go home in December for my annual 2 week coyote hunt/Christmas visit and it will likely get a 4-12 prostaff or a 3.5-14 prostaff 5 put on it. I'd say you can buy with confidence!

The P223 3X is so short that it will not mount on many rifles unless you use a picatinny base.

There bullet\shock proof for sure, I have a prostaf bdc,2.5-10x40 on my .243, the only reason I know their shock proof, is when I was setting up to mount it on my rifle, I dropped the scope, it fell 4 feet onto the concrete floor, it had dime size dent in it, long story short, the glass is clear, reticle is perfect and I've put over 200 rounds through it no problems, good scope!

Hey Barton,

Since you are a Pro-Staffer for Nikon, perhaps you can tell me why Nikon does not have riflescope on their homepage of http://www.nikon.com/? Or even a reference to riflescopes?

Is Nikon trying to keep shooters out of view of their more genteel clientele?

Are they ashamed of hunters and shooters?

They have a distinct page for riflescopes www.nikonsportoptics.com., though.

This is why I would never own a Nikon riflescope again, nor do I recommend them.

If they are ashamed of us, sc&^% them.

The 3x32 p223 is very short and very quick with great eye relief, and adjustments. I don't think it's any secret that it is designed for ar-15s which have rails on them, so putting down its compact size is kinda like saying she was "too pretty" for your tastes.

Nikon is first and foremost a camera and imaging company. They serve a clientele that is likely anti-gun, and they do it well. Nikon also has uniquely clear glass, because of their experience in this field. I have personally sold the 4 Nikon's I did have, but acknowledge that their value has had a positive effect on the market, causing all optics companies to stay on their toes.

I wasn't putting it down, just stating the truth that it can be pretty difficult to mount. IIRC they won't even fit with the Nikon one piece riser, only the two piece and even then it is pretty tight. I mount 20-30 scopes a week at work and that is what my experience has been.

Not certain about the ProStaff models in general, but I have put 1,000's of rounds through several high power rifles that are wearing the Buckmaster series and none have ever failed to hold zero or shown any other problems. Nikon is better than average glass and for the money they are very hard to beat.
