nikon scope choice

im looking at two scopes in the classified forum. one is a 4.5x14 buck master w BDC. the other is a 10x42 monarch w mill dot. Ive never looked down a nikon but hear good things about them. both are simallarly priced so which is the better scope?
going to put it on a model 12 .243 used primarily for targets and deer. help me out if you have any experience w nikon scopes. thanks

The monarch is a higher quality scope than the buckmark. But a fixed 10 power scope doesn't seem that practical for hunting.
 
Go with the nikoplex reticle for targets the bdc is a pain for precise target shooting IMO. I had a coyote special and while it was great for coyotes it wasn't really practical for target shooting for me. For deer I would go with a 3x9 plenty for the closer shots and still enough magnification for the longer shots.
 
Skin, If you were just interested in shooting paper targets I would steer you away from the BDC reticle, but since you do also say it'll be used for deer hunting I think the BDC Scope is the way to go.
You can go to Nikonhunting.com, click Spot On, register, it's all free, enter your scope, ammo and rifle cal. and get corresponding distances for each BDc circle. I have personally shot to 600 yards with a couple of diferent BDC scopes and stock rifles. Trust me, it works.

Brown., I tell anyone looking at the Coyote Special to look down the tube and make sure it'll work for them. I have one on my DPMS Praire Panther and right of the bat I wasn't sure it'd work for me, now 6:6 on coyotes, it's the rifle I grab first.
You just have to find what is going to work the best for your needs.
The Buckmaster 4.5-14 BDC will give you a lot of scope for many different situations, agree it is the better of the 2 choices for your hunting/shooting needs.
 
Plus, the Buckmaster style BDC is different then the coyote special. The Buckmaster does indeed have center x-hairs with descending circles. The buckmasters are great buys for the money.

sry... i meant to say its a 2.5-10x42 mildot on the monarch
 
I own a Buckmaster and LOVE it - price was good and the glass is bright (Not a Ziess) but pretty [beeep] good for the money. Monarch is a level up from Buckmaster - are you sure that its a straight 10x = I have a Monarch Red Dot on my High Standard .22 that I shoot in bullseye comp. and its freaking awesome. I went from sharpshooter to expert level the 1st time I used it.
 
I've got a 4-12 Monarch and two 3-9 Buckmasters.

The Monarch is slightly better, plus it's AO.

But the Buckmaster's are pretty darn nice scopes, the difference in image quality isn't really much.

2.5 - 10 would be nice, I think you'll be impressed (at that price, I paid a lot more for mine).
 
I have the same model Buckmaster but with a mildot reticle. I have had nothing but perfect operation with the scope. Tracks perfectly and alswys returns to zero.
 
Wow...did some shooting today and im impressed with the monarch. zeroed at 100 and did what I thinks is called a box drill. anyways, clicked in 3 inches up,3 over, down,and back to the start and shot bugholes right on zero.
glass is great.well worth the money. thanks all for the advise.
 
Glad to hear you are happy Skin. I get some posts from Dustin Ellerman, Top Shot winner, he was shooting flies when they landed on his target. Now that sounds like fun!
 
Yeah, my Monarch is nice.

Wish it had the 4X zoom range, but I bought it before that design came out.

I figured you would be happy.
